Straffo,
Yes, he wrote for Byte. When the print edition stopped, he continued writing for the online edition until his contract expired. Apparently the contract renewal terms were not worth the time and effort he put into the column, so he allowed it to drop and continued his column on his own, here:
http://www.chaosmanorreviews.comHe requests subscriptions to keep his online offerings from becoming an unacceptable drain on his resources, but he offers almost all of his online content to everyone regardless of subscription status. He does have a small but growing subscriber-only area that includes stuff like draft excerpts from his upcoming books, and some other stuff.
I wrote a little laptop cpu upgrade article several months ago that was published on the chaosmanorreviews site. There are a lot of articles in the archive section of that site, and his regular jerrypournelle.com site has content dating back over 10 years. Jerry claims to have the oldest continually running blog on the internet (although he dislikes the term "blog"), and he states that he may actually have started the very first blog ever. He would relinquish those claims if anyone ever offered any proof to the contrary, but so far nobody has seriously challenged it. He started publishing online way back in the days of BIX, and has been posting and publishing online content continuously ever since.
