Books about the Spitfire
« on: June 19, 2007, 07:30:14 AM »
Hello, gents.

I'd like to have some advice about some books on Spitfire. I'd like to have a complete coverage about the technical aspect of the plane, the story of its evolution from the designers' board to the end of the war and beyond, a thoroughly description of the variants and so on.

If you feel to put in some titles about its operational history, I won't refuse them .;)

Thank you!

Gianlupo, lifted from another board.

Donald Caldwell has teamed up with Richard Muller and they have just released a new book:

The Luftwaffe over Germany - Defence of the Reich

Greenhill Books
ISBN: 1-85367-7122-0

Received a reviewing copy last week and although I can say that it is probably one of the best single volume books on the subject.

In this case I was lucky that Greenhill made a mistake by first sending me a copy of:

The Story of the Spitfire - An Operational and Combat History
by Ken Delve

ISBN: 1-85367-725-6

A Spifire book with a twist, its focus is development as a weapon in a tactical context.

It draws heavily upon test and field reports making it one of the more interesting Spitfire titles to date.

Umm, dont have the full details in front of me, but:

'Fly for Your Life' the story of Robert Stanford Tuck

was a great read. It carried a lot of technical details for the Spitfires slipped in between tactics, and the personal life of an RAF pilot. Its nothing I would suggest for pure research, but if you want to catch a few facts here and there throughout a great book, id suggest it for liesure reading.

Yo Gian!!

Gripen mentioned this book and when Corky sees this post he will back it up.

Spitfire The History by Eric B Morgan and Edward Shacklady

That should be exactly what your looking for.It covers everything. When Corky refered it to me he stated it was the "Bible" of Spitfire books. It wasnt an understatement. They have pictures and diagrams of construction jigs.Aircraft serial numbers.Variants Variants Variants.Development history out the wazoo!!!Check it out:aok

If you want just one book on the Spit, Pipz and Gripen are correct.

Spitfire The History by Eric B Morgan and Edward Shacklady

Not too pricey anymore and covers the Spit from beginning to end as well as the Seafires too.

Lets add:
Shot down in Flames by Geoffrey Page
Dancing in the Skies - Tony Jonsson
Nine Lives - Al Deere

;)
It was very interesting to carry out the flight trials at Rechlin with the Spitfire and the Hurricane. Both types are very simple to fly compared to our aircraft, and childishly easy to take-off and land. (Werner Mölders)
