It WAS.

The only legal occupants are 400 Japanese soldiers, and the rare U.S. pilots and crew who use the training strip.

No civilians are allowed on the island. The former occupants, and their descendants, requested the island be officially identified by its original name, Iwo To.

Iwo Jima is the wrong name anyway. Why shouldn't they change it back?

Who cares...

The name change means nothing with regards to the men who fought and died to take and defend that island.  They will always be the reason that hunk of volcanic ash is remembered.

The kanji is the same. The kanji for island can be pronounced shima (or jima in this case), or tou (not "to" as reported).

I heard that "Sea of Japan" would be changed to "East Sea".  What do you think about that?

the only difference being that when the battle concluded, all the Japanese were dead.  There were no Japanese left (not many at least, the last  two Japanese survivors on Iwo surrendered in 1949).

Let me put it to you like this straffo, the japanese were defeated on Iwo and the island was claimed as united states territory.  We gave it back some 40 years later.  We should not have.  Who knows, Maybe Boeing got a big order from JAL out of the deal :cry

Anyway, to those that know its history, that Island will always be known as Iwo Jima.

Don't worry, the Kanji character(s) for "Iwo Jima" will stay the same:)

Me at Iwo, a long time ago, on the front, left.
It will always be IWO JIMA!

It was very interesting to carry out the flight trials at Rechlin with the Spitfire and the Hurricane. Both types are very simple to fly compared to our aircraft, and childishly easy to take-off and land. (Werner Mölders)

"We?"

You earned, contributed or sacrificed nothing and are just a carpetbagger on the coattails of a different generation.

Those who know its history know that it was returned 24 years later and was known as Iwo Tou far longer than it was known as Iwo Jima. They also know that Japan paid for the return of the islands and Okinawa. For the past half a century, Japan has continued to be the best ally the US has, in spite of your "opinion."
