I hit that Panzer six times with my Tiger

main gun and do no damage! This is BS! He must be a **insertCwordhere*!

Every day we can read such things on the various ingame textchannels.

However, things are not always how they do appear. A perfect example happened to me yesterday:

I was defending a vehicle field against enemy tanks. I spotted a Panzer, rolled into position and fired away.
I was quickly able to score hits at D1400:

(The small size of that picture is due to the film viewer limitations. In game, the zoom in gunners position is far more effective, and I could clearly see the hit splash on his hull)

But even after 5 consecutive hit that panzer was still able to fight and finally sent me back to the tower.

I thought "Wtf?". But luckily I have the habit of recording almost combat I have.

When reviewing the film, I found the following:

(external view centered on enemy tank)

The hit sprites originated from a hedgerow behind that panzer. Due to a game glitch (or feature? ;) ) the sprite was shown so large and in front of that Panzer, that it only seemed that the panzer was hit. During combat, it was absolute impossible to realize that in fact the Panzer was not hit at all.

Conclusion? Perception and game reality do not always match. Be careful with all that cheating allegations :aok

The first picture is through main gun, the second one is the F3 outside view centered on enemy tank.

The largest problem in this game for all GV turrets and shore batteries is the lack of ranging tools. Historically you'd have split-glass rangefinders (adjust them til the image is whole then read range on dails) or lense focus mechanisms (adjust til it's in focus then read the range on dials) and could pinpoint within a couple of seconds the range to target. This would ESPECIALLY be useful in ship/shore batteries, but also more so in GV guns.

If HTC does not plan on adding any rangefinders anytime soon, I'd request they add range icons to enemy GVs. We have them on planes to make up for lack of depth perception in pilots, well in GVs you'd have tools (which we don't have) so there should be concessions made as well to GVers.

I don't know for allied tanks, but to my knowledge neither Panther nor Tiger tanks had rangefinders.
There were some converted Beobachtungspanzer V, (observing tanks), Panthers without a cannon but with a rangefinder.

The planned Panther Ausf. F and the Panther II would have featured a new turret "Schmalturm" with an integrated stereoscopic rangefinder.

I don't ever have a problem ranging tanks. It just takes practice IMO. If you make it too easy with range on the tanks them selves it would make it so any noob could get one shot kills.

That and you would never be able to hide because the enemy GV's would see your range icon. In fact I think planes shouldn't be able to see range or Icons on GV's

That or it should at least be changed so planes can only see them from 1k or less. It's a pane in the bellybutton to sneak to a Abase or Vbase only to have some guy up a A20 or Il2 and kill you 5 mins after you get there.

IMO if it's so easy for them to kill a GV from the air they should at least have a hard time spotting the GV. Especially now that there is very little ground cover for GV from aircraft.

There are quite a few issues with GVs -

1) You can kill other GVs at ranges that were impossible in WW2 and in fact at ranges greater than the current 'record'.

Record - 3.1km, Challenger II during the Gulf War round one.
Longest EVER recorded tank on tank kill.

More than possible to kill tanks in AH at ranges around 3800 to 4000 yrds. (3.5km+)

2) Never thought I'd see GV's taking out airborne aircraft with their MAIN gun. Of course if anyone can show me it happening during WW2, I'll concede, but not holding my breath.

3) "Digital' zoom, at least add some instablilty to it, or something, totally unrealistic.

Kev.  You show me where pilots were stupid enough to strafe targets, in low, horizontal passes directly at the front of Armor with their machine guns.

As for range finders, yes in shore batteries, no in armor.  And when I say yes, I mean with a level of deveation too.

Don't we have a thing with the 3" and 8" guns on the ships that will target what you click on the map? I think its Shift-W or Ctrl-W then right click on the map.

The map is an inaccurate blob of pixels. Historically they looked at what they were shooting at, took a range finding, adjusted for ship direction, and fired. They didn't point at grossly-inaccurate maps and the guns tracked to some unknown spot

Yes, I saw a few glitches last night as well, Fighting with the Knights at V10... I was in an Osti, shot the wing off a TBF, the wreckage landed right in front of me... But, the plane made a perfectly controlled circuit of the field, on one wing, came down and bombed me again... I know that Grummans are tough, But COME ON????

Then there was the "Magic Mustang", with warp speed!!!!

The V10 fight was a blast, we lost, but it was FUN anyway!!!

Nice post Lusche - someone should sticky this and maybe add other examples - maybe it would quell some of the cheating allegations that fly around on occasion...
