Wow. I've never heard it used in a derogatory sense and I remember it being around from the 60s

Though with a sarcastic voice tone it. Like many other slang terms  or terms in general can be used as sarcasm.

Or just as a slang term. Like Buddy,Bro. Boss, Hotshot.

I've never heard or even considered the term "sport" to be strictly derogatory.

Really it isnt whats said.
But the way and context it is said

"Sport" can be either. As above in this thread denoted sarcasm.
Buyt it can also be used in a quite complementory mannor

"He lost the game. but he was a real sport about it"

Or "Hey sport, Hows it going?"
