Effective July 1 in the Commonwealth of Virginia, any traffic ticket, with the exception of regular speeding, will carry heavy civil penalties in addition to the fine and court costs that you will have to pay.

Quote
The legislation creates “civil remedial fees” to be
assessed against Virginia residents convicted of certain motor vehicle-related or driving
crimes.

Here are just a few of the extra fines............

    • Driving on a suspended or revoked permit - Civil penalty $750.00 + the court cost & fines
    • Reckless Driving - Civil penalty $1,050.00 + the court cost & fines
    • DUI - 1st offence - Civil penalty $2,250.00 + the court cost & fines
    • Failure to give proper signal - Civil penalty $1,050.00 + the court cost & fines
    • Leaving the scene of an accident - Civil penalty $3,000.00 + the court cost & fines.
    • [/b]

Be careful when you driving Virginia. Tell your friends.
This is the website that lists the offenses and how much each civil penalty is.

Only Virginia residents so the rest of us drivers won't get the extras.

Driving Suspended: Too cheap; maybe $2500.
DUI: WAY too cheap; $5k would be about right.
Proper Signal: Way too high...WAY too high. They should fugedabowdit.
Leaving the Accident: another $5k is fine by me.

      Just my .02.

This is the only  one on the list here I thought of as excessive.
While the others to me seemed about right.

About 25 years ago I received a ticket for "Driving on the suspended list"
      (which I beat,and without a lawyer I might add)
The fine back then would have been $500 plus court costs
Im kinda surprised that that one hasnt reached at least $1,000

The rest seem right to me
      But
As muich as it annoys the hell out of me when other people do it.
I think having to pay $1,050.00 for forgetting to use your directional blinker is a bit much

Seeing as how I live in Virginia, I can tell you the blinker fine should be more than it is. I don't know how many times I've almost been in an accident because some soccer mom in her minivan is to damn busy yacking on her cell phone and not paying attention to driving and has cut me off. One hand on the wheel , the other on the cell, who cares about the turn signal, I'm coming over into your lane right now.

It's the cell phone dude. talking on cell phone while driving... should be same penalty as driving while impaired because technically, one would be.

Oh I agree 100% it's the cell phone. If I'm driving in traffic I don't use mine. Pisses my girlfriend off because she'll call me and 9 times out of 10 I wont answer and if I do I'll pick up and say "I'm driving right now." and hang up.

Hell most military bases it's illegal to talk on a cell phone while driving on base now. It should be that way all over the country in my opinion.

I mean geez, people always want to talk about how guns kill people all the time, how about all the people that are killed everyday in a car crash because some idiot thought his phone call was more important that controling the several TONS of vehicle he's driving down the road at 55mph?

At least most gun owners actualy think about the responsibilty they have for protecting themselves and others when it comes to their firearms. People will hop in a car and not give saftey a second thought, and when an accident happens the public opinion is, o'well accidents happen, no big deal.

OK I'm off my soap box now.

"Aggressive Driving" is defined as operating a motor vehicle in violation of any speed law and a violation of two or more of the following traffic law provisions: (1) obedience to traffic control devices; (2) overtaking on the right; (3) driving within a traffic lane; (4) following too closely--interval between vehicles; (5) yielding right of way; (6) entering the roadway; (7) use of turn signals; (8) relating to school buses, special stops, stop signs and yield signs; and, (9) use of emergency break-down lane for travel.

      $500

This is additional to whatever moving violations committed.

In addition, this weekend is the "Air, Land, and Speed" (I did not make that up) campaign by the VA State Police to crack down on speeding and to severely enforce the speed limits on major interstates. I saw ~6 Troopers between Roanoke and Blacksburg (when on an average day I see only 1-2) this morning on I-81. Which comes as no surprise, people regularly do 10-15 mph over the posted speed limit on I-81. However, in order to not get run over you have to go with the flow of traffic and do 5-10 over the limit. The only problems I see are when yahoos (8 times out of 10 from out-of-state)  driving very aggressively, swerving in and out of lanes, using no signal, and tailgating; which just makes it more dangerous than it has to be.

      You've got a point.
My sister lives in Va.  And I go visit her a few times a year.
Va is the only place where I have experienced two things.

Make a mental note as well next time you drive.  Observe how many law enforcement officers are talking on a cell and driving.  One day about 2 months ago I counted 6 out of 10 cops doing just that.  And I do the samething when my wife calls, "I'm driving, I'll call you back."  It's amazing to me how many people in this country think that driving requires little or no effort and then ***** when they get in accident.  It's NEVER their fault.  Eh, don't even get me started on drunk titty dancers behind the wheel...
