Probably better known to us Minnesota types since he was one of 'us'.

Charles "Chuck" Lindberg, the last survivor of the six U.S. Marines who raised the first American flag over Iwo Jima during World War II, died in Edina, MN yesterday at the age of 86.

He was part of the first patrol sent up Suribachi that planted the first flag, not the replacement flag from which the photo we all know was taken.

Since my father was there when both flags were raised (on the island) and is also gone on to his reward, I feel a ping in my soul to read this.

I believe you're right. I had the honor of re-enlisting my Gunny on top of Suribachi in Spring of 2001 right in front of the monument commemorating the flag raising. Hallowed ground if there is any in U.S. History as far as I'm concerned.
