Favorite Scenes in a War Movie
« on: June 27, 2007, 01:46:36 PM »
In Harm's War is playing on TCM.  Just witnessed one of my favorite scenes in a war movie:

"Goodbye Commander.  Enjoy it."

"What do you suppose he meant by that?"

"Well aren't you leaving with Broderick?"

"No."

"I think you are."

"Now wait a..."

"Now I don't care how you do it but you better be on that plane with Broderick...unless you want to be buried on the island of Gava Vutu."

"You can't do this..."

"I am doing it.  Now we've got a job to do here on Gava Vutu and neither you nor Broderick or anybody else is gonna screw it up......  Understand?  Hmm? And take this punk with you."

That sprint to the SS company taking a break, where the smoke grenade Winters uses to time the attack misfires.
There's probably a few at the top of my list, but that's the first I thought of.

It's hard to beat these:

Maverick: That's right! Ice... man. I am dangerous.

Maverick: Tower, this is Ghost rider requesting a flyby.
Air Boss Johnson: That's a negative Ghost rider, the pattern is full.

Carole: Hey Goose you big stud!
Goose: That's me, honey.
Carole: Take me to bed or lose me forever.
Goose: Show me the way home, honey.

Iceman: The plaque for the alternates is down in the ladies room.

Maverick: I feel the need...
Maverick, Goose: ...the need for speed!

Maverick: Jesus, this guy's good!
Viper: Damn, this kid is good!

Goose: Come on, Mav, do some of that pilot s@!

Iceman: You can be my wingman any time.
Maverick: B#S*! You can be mine.

Bridge over the River Kwai - Where the Brits initially march into the camp whistling "Corporal Bogey" followed by the confrontation with Col. Saito over the Geneva Convention. Also the final scene "What have I done..."

Battle of Britain - "Help yourselves everybody, there's no escort"

Waterloo - Farewell to the Old Guard

Zulu - The Singing competition between the Zulus and the Welsh - "Men of Harlech"

Breaker Morant - the Boer attack on the Prison and Morant's "Rule .303 speech"

All time favorite - Cruel Sea - The men in the water with the U-boat underneath them dilemma.

Those are just a few that come to mind...

In Paths of Glory when the two men are arguing about which is the best and most painless way to die. But in the end they both agree that nobody wants to die.

In the 1994 Film Stalingrad. When Rollo and Von Witzland go to search for wounded. GG wants to go help them, when the older Soldier grabs him and tells him to stay put. He says

"You look like my son back home"

GG: "How old is he?"

"Three"
There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!

Kelly's Heroes.

At the farmhouse. Joe is dressing down the troops.

"If I hear any more threats against Captain Maitland's life. If I hear any more wild talk about going down to headquarters and killing the General, or raping the nurses at the field hospital, I'm going to strangle the guy with my bare hands! You understand that?...."

From "The Final Countdown"

When the F-14s overfly the Senator's yacht

"Are those OURS?"

"I thought I saw US markings!"

And of course, the whole engagement with the Zeroes.

"Why the he** are we playing with these guys??"

Yes, very unforgettable.  At that point in the movie, I had stabbed myself in the leg with my OWN knife so as to escape the pain of what a horrible movie it is.
