Yup Rip    seven years old and just the third Oil change and first indication of anything wrong.  ABS light came on intermitantly.  Had the Techs at BMW check it out.  Only a Right rear wheel sensor.

Had the ole cooling system flushed and pressure tested and did the same with the brake system.

BMW quality.......ya gotta love it!

Of course we BMW owners pay more......but we always get quality eh Rip?

Rip yes....I have 14,000 miles on it now.   It's so sweet I could never part with it.   Nothing like seeing a sign that says "curve 25mph"  and you punch the accelerator to enter the curve at 50mph.

Nothing can replace that rush....except someone backing out of a driveway on said curve! :rofl

BTW Cecil B deRipsnort how's the picture industry doing ;)

Have seen some of your work posted here on the Boards....well done.  Dint know ya had it in ya! ;)

Cit hiyas!

No fortunately.  BMW Technical Supv said that since I average so little and synthetic oil is used every other year is fine.  The BMW actually tells you when to change oil and it has nothing to do with mileage.  It somehow monitors the quality of the oil.  Usually oil changes are needed every 9,000 to 13,000 miles on the Bimmer when driven regularly.  There is a light and a series of lights that will indicate when to schedule an appointment.

There are only two types that BMW allows (per my manual) of Oil to be used.  BMW Racing Oil or Mobil1.  It takes 7 quarts.  The Filter is also a cartridge not a regular Oil Filter as we are used to.

Also.....it doesn't sit for 3 months.  Even in winter if the roads are clear and relatively salt free I'll take it out and drive for at least half an hour.  Any shorter period and condensation in the exhaust system would still be liquid.

I'll try and do this every four weeks during the winter weather permitiing.

This is a fallacy maintained by the motor trade. In other parts of the world cars are being sold with 15-20,000 mile service intervals. Here in the States they try to kid us on oil still needs to be changed every 3-5000 miles.

aye hajo my less fancy honda civic that I just bought has the same oil life sensor gadget that gives oil life as a percentage. it does have a nice gps navigation system that gives me many fond memories of when I used to fly a cessna 182S all over the place for fun :D

the owner was obsessed with changing the oil often especially before long trips.

I was more obsessed with getting the prop balanced because it made the H stab vibrate visibly in flight. though not affecting control I found this to be a worisome problem for structural integrity if left uncorrected for a long period of time.

Wow.

Yeah, I'm sure scientific evidence is pure malarkey when it comes to oxidation, blowby (which  increases with mileage and dumps more unburned fuel into the crankcase which dilutes the oil.) and high temperatures /high levels of moisture resulting in significant additive depletion due to hydrolysis.

Of course, if you live in a moderate temperature climate, say, 60 deg year around, and drive like a grandma, 3-5k oil changes may not be necessary. ANything outside of the constant range and grandma driving, well, good luck if you plan on owning that engine more than 100k.

Cit....don't kid yourself that Honda Civic is a great great car.  If american automakers made cars as reliable as the civic they would sell more.

A friend of mine told me this.  In the US we build more automobiles in less time.  In Europe and other countries most companies such as Porsche, BMW, Volvo, and SAAB build fewer autos because they take the time to build them right.  Same thing applies to Honda, Toyota and others.

Why is it that the first 100K warranties had to come from Foreign automakers and not the US?

That question has an obivious answer.

BMW quality.. what an urban myth!

My 2005 325Ci has had several troubles from the start. Now 35000 km driven and

-transmission failed, installed new one
-clutch was replaced first , but the problem was the tranny.
-insides of rear power transmission were replaced.
And I even do not drive hard!

-Drivers door has been realigned 6 times so far, it starts cranking and door opening becomes hard after a time.
-AC fan started making chirping noise-->replaced.
-something was wrong with steering-->they repaired something, dunno what.

+++ all other little things.

Now the car seems to behave, my 2 year guarantee is due to end next month. Lets hope it keeps that way.

Sorry to hear about all your problems, but yours is an exception as I have monitored BMW forums for 7 years now....rarely were there any lemons such as yours.
I had 90,000 miles on my 2001 330ci and never had a problem. Even the original brakes were still good when I sold.

Well, there’s your problem right there! You are supposed to drive a BMW hard!

Stop leaning on it when you enter and exit the car. The hinges are designed to hold the door, not the door AND your fat arse!

During spring, summer, and fall (when the trees are crapping all over your car) clean out the air intakes before starting! :huh

Some suspension parts wear out! They are supposed to wear out to spare the expensive stuff from wearing out! On a BMW 850 (an extreme case I admit) you have to change the ENTIRE front suspension every 30,000 km!

Btw. in case you took me seriously, this post is entirely a joke… Well, mostly a joke anyway. ;)

Jarski....ouch.  Sorry to hear about your trouble.  Hope that BMW is fine now.  I wouldn't sell mine.  The most fun car to drive I've owned and I've owned a few.
