Listen to the comments... "no more iron".  Sounds like they were shooting at an iron plate.  Not sure what came back and hit him though... They didn't show what hit him so it could have been something else that came back.

I remember getting tagged by bbs coming back from shooting the rounded bottom ends of soda cans...

Whatever it was it hit the ground around 8-10 feet in front of him before bouncing up and hitting his hearing protectors. look at the video at :20 to see the dirt get kicked up.

I did have glasses my whole life basically (plastic lenses) so I wasn't too worried about the direct eye richoet other than my mother getting mad at buying me new glasses form the scratched lens :lol

They sounded like they were going to keep shooting after that.

Christ, if that happened to me, I'd call it a day, buy a nice bottle of scotch on the way home, and 10 dollars worth of powerball tickets.

Would the bullet or a fragment of it make that sort of noise?  It definitely is going pretty slow, sounds like it could be about 1/3 the speed the bullet takes to hit it's target.

People way underestimate the ability of bullets to come back one way or the other. You take a trip to Knob Creek and watch the night shoot once and you'll understand just how frequently stuff does come back to the firing line and .50 cal. bullets seem to be the best at doing it.

You should never shoot at metal targets that are not perfectly flat and have no bullet indentations.

Also never shoot at steal that doesn't move. 50 bmg does have that bounce back tendency.

Anytime your shooting steel make sure that it will give our angle the target. Its safe to shoot steal with lead bullets its the fmj ones that will get ya.

We added bottle rockets and roman candles as 'mortar fire'.

God those were the days...

I used to make a mortar. Take a steel pipe larger enough for a shotgun shell to easily slide through. Use empty used shotgun shells, put a small hole in the shell near the base of it. Insert a fuse from a firecracker in the hole add about a half teaspoon of black powder to the interior of the shell making sure to cover the fuse of the firecracker and tamp with foil. Set a fuse in it and place the shotgun shell sticking base up in the pipe. Aim the pipe and light the fuse. The shell goes whump, zing! out of the pipe with the firecracker now lit. It hits downrange and the firecracker blows up.
