All right, Angus, and all you Marines carrying the M-1 Carbine (but the Carbine is another thread).

Did you indeed?
It was actually a slice of Germany, roughly a quarter, and less than that proportion of the population.
And the giving back...was made by brave folks from the eastern part.

As for the Carbine, - I carried the Thompson most of the time, and then the M1, which was the most common one.
(Thompson was very comfortable to carry, M1 not so.)
It was very interesting to carry out the flight trials at Rechlin with the Spitfire and the Hurricane. Both types are very simple to fly compared to our aircraft, and childishly easy to take-off and land. (Werner Mölders)

The Russian soldier was not just fighting Hitler he was often in as much danger from Stalin!and the NKVD

He was shot at going forwards and backwards,if he was captured he ended up in a concentration camp,If he was released...He ended up in a Soviet concentration camp.

And just to make it clear,I have no time for Stalin or his evil regime,I believe in credit were it's due,and believe the the Russian peoples sacrifice in WWII,has gone virtually unoticed in the west, due to Hollywood, the cold war and the stain of an evil communist regime .

The Russian people paid in Blood, lakes of it,and  Stalin added to that Lake.

Most if not all historians acknowledge the war was won in the East, but could not have been done,at least not as Quickley without the ford/studebaker trucks and the vast amount of other  lend lease material supplied by the USA.This was paid for in Dollars, but the real payment was in Blood
