IL-2 pilots...
« on: July 02, 2007, 06:16:42 PM »
I know that several pilots fly the IL-2 as a regular ride. Just for the hell of it, this tour I made the IL-2 my primary aircraft. I'm curious as to how you IL-2 guys scored this past tour (June).

How did you folks do?

Your stats are nice Widewing, you certainly put in your time with the old 'flying sofa'.
As for me, I stopped flying for points over a year ago, now even with 8 or 10 kills in the bag I just bail and head back to the tower.  I just don't get much time in the summer for flying (I'm a farmer) and I don't care about 'rank' anymore, just having fun in what time I can spare for the game. But as a committed Il-2 nutcase I try to work on something different every month.  This month it was getting kills with rockets, particularly on the Shermans.

How did you like a month in the flying tank?  Think you'll be back?  The Il can become addictive.....

:D

I'll fly it some, as I do every tour. For June, I thought it would be fun to fly some of the less used aircraft. I started out in the P-40E, but switched to the IL-2 as it more entertaining. I added three sorties in the Bf 110G-2.

I spent more time in the MAs in June than I had in the previous two months combined. I did a little bit of everything. I didn't fly many designated fighter sorties. My son-in-law flew several, and managed 3 augers, including a 262... Not a problem as I have many thousands of perk points I don't use.

I was curious how the IL-2 jocks do in general. I expect that they did very well. The IL-2 is quite able to defend itself and is a fun plane to fly aggressively. I killed 57 aircraft with the IL-2, most of them fighters. The IL-2 is fun because you always start out at a significant disadvantage and must reverse those circumstances to get the kill. Because the 23mm cannons are so lethal, any mistake by the enemy pilot usually has severe consequences.

I am an IL2 lover as well. Is there a way to tell what all you killed in that AirCraft??? I had 61 kills in it this last Tour.

I am alot like Widewing i like to chose a diffrent plane each tour to fly in my off time. this tour i am picking the P-40-E but prolly will change it to the 109K4 due to the fact i have not flown it much :D

il2 MO: Do an violent nose down maneuver that would cause a pilot's brain to pour out his nose, level for a sec to clear the split second red-out, acquire target, shoot said target in the behind. For specific on this  gamey trick, speak to chaingun and Ghi.

You forgot to mention that this move needs a opposing pilot dumb enough to fall for it ;)

I guarantee ya they couldn't pull the gamey MO (described above) without F3 view. They'd auger in 99% of the time (the other 1% being ditches or dinged props).

Yes, it's gamey as hell, but if you have enough speed you can rope the llamas after they spray futilely at you.

IL2 needs its flight engine looked at, IMO. The "take a tank round to the engine" bug that was fixed a while ago is probably only the tip of the iceberg. That bug's been there since Ah2 came out! Maybe since Ah1 came out!! Who knows what other bugs are lurking? Including the ability to float like a butterfly at times (this I've seen)

I didn't mean to imply I can't shoot them down.  I changed my tactics a bit since running into these gametards and I do fair against them.  Last tour I was 10-0 against the IL2's. Previous tours had some deaths to IL2's while in GV's.

Please take no offense. I wasn't aiming that at you. It was more like venting at their annoying gamey tactic.

:aok

f3 is not an option i fly w/,  i had to others about, what f3 is,

90% of the time i have a gunner who, looks out for my 6,

there is no rearview to see out of the il2, being shot from the 6

postion is where i usally die from, if its that offensive to otheres,

i will no longer fly the IL2 :(  shhes;(

I don't fly enough in the MAs to get even close to those numbers... This past tour I went 167kills, 9 loses. Two loses to fighters, one to a collision. The rest to field acks and Flaks. 57 kills were aircraft, and a few of those bombers. I switched to the 110G for an evening to prevent boredom. That's another nasty aircraft to find yourself in front of.

As to the issue of "gamey" tactics referred to by others, I've seen this as well. As to me, I only use F3 to clear my six as the IL-2 is virtually blind behind the wing line. I don't need gamey tactics as I'm satisfied that I can fight with just about anyone well enough to have a reasonable chance at prevailing. The IL-2 is all about managing your E effectively. Between 150 mph and 200 mph, the IL-2 can turn remarkably well. Well enough to eat up the average Joe in his Niki or Spit.

I don't get roped because I will not follow anyone up without the E to get the job done. I'll just bear off and wait till he comes down, turn straight into him and let the guy consider the consequences of HOing an IL-2. The smart ones break off, the dumb ones die.

One of the fun events develops after you kill a guy's tank several times. He ups an Osti and you kill that a few times. Finally, he grabs a fighter and comes back for some revenge. What he gets is another trip to the tower.

I have found that being extremely aggressive with enemy fighters is the best bet. If a fighter shows up, I head straight to him. Push them, lean on them, make them maneuver and many guys will screw up at some point. When there's a furball developing, I always tell friendlies to drag the enemy to my IL-2 and I'll scrape him from their six. Few aircraft are as effective as the IL-2 at this because the enemy pilots seldom consider the IL-2 as a viable air to air threat or are so focused on the target they never see the IL-2 setting up for the deflection shot. Either way, they usually get evaporated as they go by.

What the vast majority of players don't realize is, the IL-2 is a great ride to learn E management skills and rewards those skills probably more than any other plane in the game.

Widewing
