you usually get a fuel tank fire when your being engaged and are hit... fuel tank fire is less common... but if it were changed to engine fire, your not going to beable to fly from enemy base (usually get engaged on a bombing run) back to your home base or any close base with an engine fire.... cook time would be probally 1-1.5 minute untill the engine fire burns into the thin material of the wing and ignites hydrolic, or fuel lines / tank on fire... then either boom or by by wing.

I believe the F4U Corsair had a 'fire suppressor'. Not exactly sure of the contents... be it CO2 or something else, but my cross sections show a fire suppressor directly in front of the oil tank's armoured plate.

Then again my P-38L cross section (different company) shows what is claimed to be a 'rocket firing tube' in the boom landing gear wells, attached to the bulkhead that fixes the tail to the rest of the ship.

better?:p

This would be much too dangerous.

I would suggest wetting a towel and laying it over the flames. Wait 30 seconds until the flames are dead and the area has cooled.  Then gather up your towel and fold it neatly after taking your seat back in the cockpit.

I really dont think diving would work.... I mean the fuel is all over the plane nd by the time you begin to dive it has seriously weakened that area and diving might only proceed to tear that piece off
