General Overview Of The Game?
« on: July 06, 2007, 03:41:24 PM »
Hello everybody.  Let me start off by saying that I can't wait to get into the game and have some good dogfights with everyone, I think you'll find me a great addition to the community (perhaps not in skills but in contributions, being nice, etc 8)  ).  Although this is a new account, I have been visiting the forum off and on for about the past 7-9 months, just really didn't have a need to post, so I do have a basic understaing so some stuff, but most off it comes from actually playing the game, so...

Anyway, I would really like it if I could get a general overview of how the game is played before I jump into it.  I have read just about everything there is on this site, plus the other helpful sites, but I am still a little confused.

So basically, I just looking for an overview of what you would do right as you log on.  While your playing etc.  Maybe there is some stuff I should be aware of?

Like for example.  The rooks, bishops, and knights.  Do each stand for a certain country or team or something.  Can you only fly certain planes under a certain side or what?  Is the MA all about capturing bases and winning the war or is it just where you go to dogfight etc?

Just stuff like that and anything else I should know about.  Perhaps even stuff about the forums?

PS:  I am trying to see if one of my computers has the right stuff to be able to play, so if anyone in the next couple of days could go over the the tech section and see if I have the right hardware I would appreciate that, I'll get the post with my specs up in by tonight.

Thanks for any help I get,
-Brian

Any way you want.  Its a game.  Do what is fun for you.  On my first minute in the game, I selected a plane and took off.

PS.  You will be told what to do and how to do it by many.  Ignore them unless you have a paypal acount and they are sending you the 14.95

the knights, bish, and rooks are all different teams.  All can fly the same planes.  some people like to win the wars(you can do whatever you want with your $15).   The base capture system is put in to encourage fighting.

there are diffrent maps on the online arena you will chose between 6 maps and an SEA or special events arena. that as you know what it is once you pick the one that you want then you can go to three diffrent contries that is teams the bishops the rooks or the knites now you have the team that you have.

now if you configured your mouse or stick you can take off and fly if you want to get into a dogfight then land and look at the map if you see red that is an enemy if you want to follow green to another teams felid then take up and fly .

that is all that I can think up of except expect no quarter from the other teams they will fight to the death and as a noob then you will get shot down plenty

the beauty of the game is that there are so many ways to enjoy it.

in the air you can fly fighters or bombers or supply runs.

you can do this as part of a team effort or as a lone wolf

you could just "furball"(dogfight:aok ) or you could be part of the whole take over enemy bases to win the war realestate crowd

you may like the ground war with the tanks and jeeps

or take lvts and pt boats out for a day on the water.

there are 3 teams -knights-bishops-rooks

they all have the same planes boats and vehicles available to start ..but if one side has a greater numbers advantage then they start to loose the "choice" planes and vehicles until things even out again.

i personally prefer to dogfight ,, but one of the easiest way to find a fight is go where the enemy is trying to take a base.  ( i especially like to interrupt what are sometimes refered to as "milkrunners" or folks who like to attack undefended bases)

some guys  dont care what they have to do as long as they capture a base..they will drive tanks jeeps or crawl on there hands and knees to sneak a base

some guys just bomb stuff
some guys just post on the forums and whine about how things should be

lots of ways to have fun.. your style of play may overlap  any combination of another groups.. but it doesn't matter.. just have fun..

I suggest pick a plane you like and go make something explode
(you might want to try the training arena for help getting started tho )

and btw   welcome to the game
:D

It can be whatever you want, whatever you like.

It started with a heavy emphasis on air to air combat. So much has been added that there are players who hardly ever fly in fighters...and of course, some who never do anything else.

The basic framework is simple. Bases and carriers allow you to take off in a plane or a vehicle. You can just go find things to blow up (players or buildings, but no computer controlled enemies), or you can try to capture enemy territory. That's done by killing all buildings and AA guns in the town near the city, and then delivering 10 paratroopers to the maproom before any structure rebuilds.

Of course, the whole time the other guys are trying to stop you.

There is some tactical work you can do by destroying the base's ordinance (ability to have bombs/rockets), radar (so they can't see nearby dots on the map), troops (so they can't send a capture plane or vehicle from that base), or hangars (so they can't take off in a vehicle, bomber, or fighter -- depending on what hangars are destroyed.) You can also affect resupply of damaged bases by hitting their strategic targets.

But you don't HAVE to do anything except have fun. Want to take off in bombers, forget about bombing and try to kill planes from your gunners position? Cool, talk to 999000 or 707200. Want to use tanks most of the time and get good at shooting planes out of the sky? Talk to the LTARS. Want to be part of the effort to capture the map? Join organized missions, or just hook up with groups and squads that work on base capturing. Want to get good in fighters (I personally think this is the hardest and most rewarding part of the game) , and forget about capturing bases? Talk to the trainers, and hook up with an air to air squad.

Whatever you want.

Hi Brian,

Welcome to AH2

Each map starts with each country(rooks, bishops, Knights) have equal amount of bases. The goal is to capture the other countries bases. If you own 100% of your countries bases and....I think 60% each of the other countries bases your country wins the war. IF that happens you get points that effect your rank. The map then resets.

HOW you play the game is up to you. Some are really into team work and capturing bases. Others dont care one bit about capturing bases they are here to furball (dogfight in a big swirling mess). And others dont fly at all they do only ground vehicles (gv's)

Some terms:
Vulching - flying to a base and shooting people on the runway or just as they take off where they are most vulnerable. Much hated by everyone. IF you do this all the time you will get a bad reputation. However, it is OK if you do it when your team is trying to capture a base. Other than that it is bad manners.

Cherry Picking - Flying high at alt and coming down to pick off someone who has already been engaged and is slow or has just made a kill and trying to climb out. Even more hated than vulching. If you do this all the time you will again get a bad reputation and no one will like you.

HO -  Head On shot. Regardless of real history or not this is extremly hated in this game. It shows you have no skill. It is a "newb" or "dweeb" tactic. There is no advantage in doing it. You have a very high chance of colliding or being hit your self. Its much better to use this to your advantage and set up the hoing dweeb for an easy reversal.

Running - When you get reversed and there on your six you run like a little girl. Again this shows your newbish with no skill. You will learn much faster and get great respect if you turn and fight. There is nothing wrong with "extending for seperation". But if you run for a whole sector then climb and come back for more cherry picking your a total dweeb.

Score hoing - This invloves doing things to only improve your score. Like only engaging if you have all the advantages like alt, vulching etc.

Ego - Be as polite and humble as you can. Now I am guilty of spewing some channel 200 smack as everyone eventually gets frustrated and does this at some point. Just dont make a habit of it. Once you get pretty good you will begin to feal as if you are the king. No one likes a bully. So just be as nice as you can. Refrain from being drawn into channel 200 fights. As the saying goes "if you dont have something good to say dont say it at all"

Squads - Each squad had there own way of playing. Some only furball. Others only cap bases. And some do only GV's. And some just wont engage unless they have all the advantages.

This game has a very high learning curve. You WILL get shot down ALOT. Do not become frustrated (easier said than done). Keep at it. There are many players who will help you if you ask.

I have played all kinds of computer games. This is the only one I have found that equalizes everyone. You must use your head and not your "twitch skills". Winning has nothing to do with how fast you can click your mouse or how good your hand/eye coordination is. Its all about using your brain and outsmarting the other guy.

Visit the training areana as much as you can. There are many folks there who can help. I will be glad to help sometime if you ask.

This game is kind of like the school yard recess. You will have all kinds out there. The bullies, the tricksters, the tattle tales etc. The thing to remember most is just have fun and don't get sucked into the drama.

Good luck

the MAs you go do what you consider fun. very few limitations on what you do and when, as far as bombing , dogfighting, GVing (ground vehicle). sometimes a side balancer does kick in and certain rides might not be availible for awhile. there are arenas split up as in early war, mid war, late war. that plane sets may be limited. usually in late war almost everything is availible at some time or another. the carriers are restricted on planes that can be upped from them. the ME163 rocket plane is usually limited to one field near HQs.

the MA is basically what ever you make it to be. Rooks, Bishops, and Knights are countries/teams. whichever one you are, the other two are your enemies. default icon tag colors, if I remember right, greens are friendlies, reds are enemies. they can be changed to whatever color suits you.  there are a lot of settings that can be set to your preferences.

there is a steep learning curve for AH. it will take a while, maybe even years to get really good. might want to find a trainer to help you with some of the things in the Training Arena (TA). should be able find one through the training forum, or by email. if none are in the TA at the time, if you go in there.

main things you need to know about the forums are posted in the rules.

Welcome !!

Hope to see you in game soon.

I would recommend you check out the many resources online to get an understanding of some of the technical aspects of this game. It will make it a lot easier for you if you understand the fundamental mechanics of how things operate.

I would also recommend you spend some time in the TA (Training Arena) just messing around with things and learn how it really works before you go out into the main arenas.

I have been flying online sims for a loooong time so here is some free hard learned advice :D

Above all else, just have fun.  :aok

No matter what you do somebody is gona whine about it so just have fun. Pay no attention to peeps giving you a ration, just ignore them. Listen to the players that take the time to talk with you and point things out. They are trying to have fun too and prolly dont give a care about squeakers either.  :aok

What ever happens dont get discouraged, this is a very difficult game to excell at and you will get your butt handed to you often and for a long time before you gain any real skill. So hang in there and keep the faith.

Avoid the temptation to engage jerks verbally in game if they give you a ration. Every where you go there is that 10% that just cant get along with the program. If you sit back and watch and listen you will quickly find out who the Squeakers are and who the decent players are you can have some fun with in here.  :aok

Remember, the "Bottom Line" here is, its your $15 a month, have fun spending it and dont let anybody tell you what to do.

Hope to see ya in the sky either wingin with me or in my gunsights :aok

Either way I am here to have fun

Later,
KayBay
See ya in the Sky !!

yep she's a real beauty:)

welcome donkey, my advice would be to find a plane you enjoy and fly it.  don't worry about the jerks, no one likes them anyway.  as mentioned, you will get shot down alot, but no one lives for ever, and as corky will tell you, they always give you another one.  you will run into people who want to tell you how good they are and how bad you are, don't pay them any attention.  have fun, make some friends (despite a few bad apples, there are plenty of very nice people who play this game) and at the end of the day, if you had fun that's all that counts.  Also, after learning the very basics, like how to take off, land, and basic understanding of your controls (sorry if you already now, seems you have done a bit of research), look up a trainer.  They are very helpful and will not fill your head with crazy idea's and tactics.  Also of the trainers that i'm aware of, they have been around a long time, it is a good way to meet some people.  Good luck, hope to see you roaming the skies soon - Vast.

Green get big, pull back.  Blue get big, push forward.

After that, it's easy.  Jump in and have fun, you get all the planes you can eat for 15 bucks a month.  Don't try to figure out the game on the boards, some of these jokers are smart alacks  :D

You have gotten a lot of great replies, and if you have been reading the BBS for 6-7 months you know better than to listen to dedalos, hes just a crotchety old SOB who enjoys causing trouble :noid

As to the first thing I'd do, I'd go into the Training arena and get hooked up with a trainer. A couple hours in there to get you set up, and get you some basic idea on flying and fighting could be the most important thing you could do. Sure you could jump into the main arena and give it a go, but the frustration can sour even the most pumped up flyer to hit the skies.

Once you get into the MA, come looking for the 39th FS "Cobra in the clouds". We fly for rooks, and spend most of our time in the new P38/XYZ's

Welcome to AH2 !
