Replacing vid card. Need suggestion
« on: July 17, 2007, 12:22:09 PM »
I'm RMAing my vid card which may be causing the issues in my other posts but the IceQ fan makes a lot of noise. New egg wants to replace it with a card of same value. What would you replace the below card for? Paid 199$ I'd like to stay with Radeon.

HIS Hightech H195PRQT256DDN-R Radeon X1950PRO 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 IceQ3 Turbo HDCP Video Card - Retail

Do all the cards have the fan pointig down?? That's probably what messed up mine.

They normally suck air in from the case and push it towards the heatsink (it then blows out the fins, cooling the heatsink). That's how most are. Some shoot the air out the back, for 2-slot cards.

I'd say get a different brand of the same type. It might just be that manufacturer. Like, for example (I don't mean to dis any companies, I'm just picking examples) if ROSEWILL made a bad card, go for BFG or some other place.

Just a thought.

About the fan, I meant why don't the built the card with the fans pointing up and basically not letting the fan hang down. Mine triesw to fall off. If I hold it a bit it will go back up and the noise will stop. They can still use 2 slots for the air to come out.

Anyway, How about this one as replacement?

Sapphire x1950xt

I was looking at this already since it's the only 1 in the price range ( will lose 40$) but Tomshardware lists it as the best card for under $200.

Well, first-off, if the fan starts coming OFF due to gravity, it's a mftr defect :D :aok None I've ever had have ever started coming off like you describe, but then it all depends on the mftr, right?

If you're 101% set on ATI, then I suppose that link's the only thing if you want to stay under the limit, that isn't from HIS.

If you want to go the other way (pay $30 more) the only other choice is:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814195029

You're kind of stuck with "lose money" or "spend money"...

On the other hand, the X1950 is a close match to the Ge 7900 series. Those start (on Newegg) at about $130 USD, so you can get more card for less $$ if you go Nvidia (at least right now, you can).

Going up to the $199 range in Nvidia cards is the higher-end Ge 8600GTS's These cards are better than the 7900 series, and probably a good jump ahead of the x1950 series, despite being stripped down compared to their full Ge8800 brothers.

Just forgetting which brand is which at the moment, it seems you get more card for the money by getting an 8600GTS.

I don't have any benchmark info on hand, but that's my suggestions. It's economics, for me.

If you're totally rabid anit-Nvidia ( :t ) then the link you posted seems like the best (only?) bet.
