Asymmetic thrust in the P-38
« on: July 11, 2007, 11:38:03 AM »
...or other multi-engine fighters.

I just got a new joystick with a dual throttle.  I was wondering if there's any advantage to using asymmetric thrust with the multi-engine fighters in the game.

I'll probably experiment with it offline later, but I figured I'd throw it out to the pros to see if it's been tried, and if so, to what effect.

Thanks,
Toonces

Do it at the wrong time and it can throw you into a spin. Apparently it doesn't help much or at all in turns (somebody else said this, I can't vouch for it). It does seem to help in hammer-head-style vertical moves. I think it'd just be cool personally.

I'm stuck with 1 throttle for now.

It would be good for takeoff, change thrust to steer the plane.

Well, in the 38 you don't need to steer on takeoff!

I think it'd be sweet to fly twin bombers with twin throttles, but until I have $150 floating around unused (HAH!) I can't get the CH quadrant throttle that I dream of.

I did make them out of legos. Flimsy arse crap.

Can't force myself to go through with it. Making it out of real parts (metal/wood) is too duanting.

No, no, no...
I have a nice fighterstick combo for home.  I was looking for something that I could haul around with my laptop, a smaller single stick with all the buttons I need for aces high.

I saw this little guy and picked it up.  I like the idea of dual throttles because I do dabble in other sims besides AH2:

I took up a P-38L and played it the dual throttle some.  It doesn't seem to help with turns too much, but it seems to help with roll.  However, I can tell that it would take alot of practice to get comfortable exploiting it in a combat environment.  Plus, I'm not really familiar with the P38, so I don't know the nuances of the flight model to tell how much the asymmetric thrust is affecting the flight path.

So far I'm pleased with the purchase.  For $40 it seems to be a nice stick.

I was looking at that. The dual throttles are interesting, but it looks ugly as sin, and the layout appears to be one of the worst ever (especially the throttle position, switches/buttons, etc...)

Agreed- I wouldn't get it for my primary stick and throttle.

I'd recommend using dual throttles for the "immersion" factor and that's it.  Any performance advantage for using one to maneuver better is negligible at best.

I used to use a SunCom dual F-15 Talon throttle when I first started AH but all it allowed me to do were really nice looking air show quality hammerheads.  So after a couple of months went back to my Pro Throttle.  However, as I mentioned in another thread, I just ordered the CH Dual Throttle so I can use one again but this time solely for the immersion factor.

Alternately, map one of them to RPM and you still fly as a single throttle stick, but with a bonus!

I had thought to do that, and then forgot!

Thanks for the tip- that's a perfect mapping for that second throttle, and fairly realistic for the prop planes I've flown.

I would definately take it for the immersion factor, but I agree with Krusty on the RPM. I actually use mine so often, I have RPMs mapped to a rotor on my X-45. Looks like a fun stick though!
