Hows the weather
« on: July 13, 2007, 01:57:08 PM »
Always good in AH, so how about changing weather, rain and snow to fight in.  It would be challenging but it would make things very interesting.  Clouds would be a great addition to, instead we always have perfect unlimited vision and ideal weather condtions.  Flight simulation would be more or less difficult according to the weather as would ground vehicle operation, you might not be able to stand off and lob shells at a 1000 yards if the weather reduced your visibility.  It would mix things up and be pretty fun.

some weather would likely screw up frame rates

They postponed the Normandy invasion because rainy weather would have meant no air cover.

They didn't fly when it was snowing. Only a few planes flew at night that weren't specially made for it.

Basically, they flew when the weather was clear. That's what we have in Aces High. I'd personally like more variation in the clouds, but that's a minor point.

Don't be foolish. Of course they did, and I'm not saying they didn't. But they didn't take off when they couldn't see, and they didn't fight in blowing rain of falling snow.

During the Battle of the Bulge, the Allies weren't able to use air support for the first few days until the skies cleared.

Better clouds would be nice. Yes i might kill your frame rates but you can always get a new video card.

I've seen snow on the ground used in Snapshots & FSO's.

This isnt flight simulation, it is combat simulation.

Thats right it isn't flight simulation and that is not what I was claiming, if you would care to read the rest of it I spoke of ground combat as well.  I also never said any thing about weather so bad as to make flight impossible, just a little incliment weather to make things interesting, and to make air and ground combat a little more challenging, and don't forget real clouds, not just a haze at 20,000.  In air combat clouds are used for tactical purposes.  In ground combat bad weather would close the distance between oponents.  In combat weather is a factor always and is always an issue except in AH.

Range down to almost half a mile visibility (1000 yards) would prevent any air force in WW2 from taking off.

Are you totally against a touch of realism or what.  The same completely perfect weather all the time is boring, predictable, and completely unrealistic.  Everytime you log on you have the same conditions to deal with.  No challenge of reduced visibility, you can always see you oponent from extreme range, you cant skip into a cloud to get the jump on someone or sneak up on someone.  Change is not evil.

Change can be evil if it's only done for the change itself, without considering all possible impacts on the game.

As already pointed out, many, if not most users would suffer severe framerate reductions. Also there is gameplay and balance to consider, that's the reason we (for exampkle) don't have wind in the MA. Most casual and new players will have tremendous problems taking off & landing with crosswinds (especially when rudder was shot off ;) )

Im sure we will see more and lot improved cloud formations in the (not so near) future as technology and inimum requirements are progressing, but it's a slow process.

ok nimrod...image in this...

after a long day you want to get on AH and play for the night...then you log on and its snowy and raining...flight is disabled for your country...log on in 3 hours and it might have cleared off:rolleyes:    Sounds like fun.  or right as you where about to take a base it got snowy and you couldnt get troops in?  What if you GVs got stuck in the mud after you drove for 10 minutes(oh...wait...we already have sinkholes in the ground:rolleyes: )   will you have fun if you get picked by ppl that you cant see.  It is a game so it cant be really realistic b/c it would not be very fun.

if it was ultra realistic you would have like 20 steps to check your control surfaces and engine before take off...constantly triming your airplane, no autopilot, 1 life, gun jams, crosswinds when you are landing your 10 kills, airplane malfunctions, and many other things that can go wrong.

i dont know about you but in a game that would not be fun IMO

You're telling me they didn't fight in the winter...

in other words... the majority of russia's battles were a lie?
