I would say you'd have one of two chances, slim and none of landing
a real aircraft.

<---- about 6 hrs in a Cessna 172

Given:
rural airport
minimal air traffic
direct head wind

50-50 of getting her down with minimal damage to yourself, aircraft or emergency ground crews.

Find a used or new Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004. There are a number of tutorials and scenarios that will teach you the basics.

Like Max said, winds the most important factor.

If you had someone on the radio telling you flap settings, stall speed etc. especially if they had eyes on you you would probably be ok.

That tail dragger would be a bit more challenge that tricycle gear tho.

well....no insult intended....but this is proof that the general public has NO idea of how safe general aviation planes REALLY are. first off......at least in the case of cessna.....unless it's a 152 aerobat, you aren't gettin out with a chute on. the aerobat has quick-release pins on the doors, so you get the whole door outta your way. in others, it doesn't open far enough to get out like that. inpipers i'm not really sure.

anyway, IF your engine quits, and IF you weren't being stupid and cruisin at only 1,000 ft alt above populated area, engine failure is no big deal. i'm always looking for a place to land in emergency when i'm up. i don't have to worry about finding a place should that happen, as if/when it does, i'll simply go to my last selected emergency landing area and.....well......land.

for those that don't know, just because your engine quits, doesn't mean the plane is gonna fall out of the sky. just establish best glide for the plane your flying.....cessna 172N is 65KTIAS, and if your hi enough(over 1500 ft) check  common possibilities....like fuel selector valve, carb heat, magnetos, primer, mixture control, etc(not necassarily in that order) glide to your selected lsanding zone(hopefully an airport) and land the plane just as you normally would.
and on the subject of parachutes....some newer models, like the cirrus line come with ballistic recovery chute systems in them. this isn't for the pilot....it's because these aircraft are spin resistant. the problem there is that if you do manage to et it into a spin, it's now almost impossible to recover.....so they instsalled a chute. it destroys the airframe, but it'll save the occupants.

I am not a pilot but I had an oppurtunity to fly a cessna 152 the other day.

I am a photographer and was up taking aerial photos. My pilot was a instructor from a local flight school.

On the return leg he let me fly. I had never touched real controls before. But it was amazingly easy. I immediatly understood all the instruments, was able to use the throttle, rudder and turn the plane and keep level flight.

I flew all the way back and made the short final. Using throttle and flaps all the way to the end of runway where the pilot took over and actually landed.

He was talking to me and telling me what to do but I felt as though I had actually flown before. My SA and feel for where I was on the horizon was quite comfortable. I felt quite confident. I had no problem looking at the instruments and basicly paying attention to what had to be done. It was basicaly just like in the game....except real.

I believe I could have landed without killing myself. At least at an airport or long strait road....that is if I had too....like with an unconscious pilot.

I am quite certain I could have done it with a talk down over a radio.

We talked about AH (pilot never played the game) but he agreed the flight sims really do help at least in some fundamentals.

The plane I was flying in is very easy plane to fly. So not sure if I could do it in some other plane.

152's and 172's may be somewhat easy to fly, but (good) landings aren't nearly as easy for an inexperienced person to do as 2-minute turns and basic maneuvers.

add the stress of a medical emergency (dying, unconscious pilot/friend) and perhaps a 172 with 3 full-sized passengers and a couple backpacks on board--that n00b is going to at least wreck the gear, if not worse.

I'd be dead for sure. :)  I dont even land my goons for troops, I drop the troops, then attempt crash-land.

In real life..screwing up a landing is not an option. You may get a ditch the hard way if you do....or worst.

I've spent alot of hours on FS2004. I dont have a computer that can play it right now, but i used to play on the FSTOPGUN server.

Most of those hours where trying to pull up to next to a FSPASSENGERS plane in a F-16.

or go take real life flying lessons. it just might save your life.

maybe, maybe not.

In my years of flight training and experience, I never was told that my Transponder had to to be tuned correctly in order to complete an emergency landing. Is this a new rule? I flew last weekend, just around the pattern a few times, with a friend who is not a pilot. If this is the case, I need to teach him a few more things before we go up again.
