Ripsnort: If you have the economy for it, you can make it ;) With family, - it's planning but the area is also worth it.
Only problem is the weather, - you might get unlucky, - this is, after all, England.
With some string-pulling, you should be able to get a press pass (I made it), and there you have a nice stand at the end of the runway as well as access to the ramp before takeoffs. I had a pass, but not a good lense. Still got some good shots, - and it's all about moving images.
I saw some 24 Spitfires in the air. I saw rare birds flying, - Ju52, Me 108, Lysander, Blenheim, and a Fokker DRI doing loops!!!!! A formation of Se5's, F8F and F7F flying around with a foot between them, etc etc etc. It's bloody incredible.
If you plonk me an email on burns@isholf.is with AIRCRAFT in the subject, I'll mail you a couple of photos, so you know what it's all about. you can post them if you like.
Anyway, since you're in the photography, I have one question.
Now you have all those nice and fancy digital cameras. I have old film gears, and some collection of lenses. Do manufactures sell a difital "back" for their old products? My stuff is all Minolta, and I both know them and like them. Feels like a waste of resources not to be able to use them.
It was very interesting to carry out the flight trials at Rechlin with the Spitfire and the Hurricane. Both types are very simple to fly compared to our aircraft, and childishly easy to take-off and land. (Werner Mölders)

I'm not sure what a digital "back" is. But in most cases, you can use the old lenses on new digital camera bodies. Best to check with the manufacturer or Minolta Camera forums first.  You lose the auto-focus capability in some cases.
