This little thieves now live in Europe too. At Caucasian coast they steal everything that is not hanged 2m high. Friends had to keep "racoon watch" at night in their camp in the forest near the Black Sea coast. I saw some myself, but only in hunter traps hiking in Western Caucasus in spring, when the snow is still thick. They were intentionally brought to Caucasus (Azerbaijan) and released, now they migrate to the North and West.

Well at times they can be a pain in the butt. I have never had any problems with them steeling. Just need to know how to deal with them.

When I had my house on the lake, I had one named Tom. He must have been very old or hit by a car. Because he moved very slowly poor guy.  But he would come and visit and sit on my deck and I would give him a cup of cat food & water. He was a pretty cool coon..

The saddest day was when I had to trap him when I sold my house. The new owner wasn't keen on taking care of a Racoon.  Even tho you could out run the poor guy, thing only had one speed slow..

Come to think about I prolly kept the poor guy alive for about 3 years.. He went to a habitat for injured animals..

LOL racoons are ingenius little creatures that will clean you out if given half a chance. Not to sure that hanging supplies two meters up will keep them safe for long. The racoon will figure out a way to get to it, if at all possible.

They are nocternal so keeping your small live stock, and even small pets safe can lead to many a sleepless nights. They live in family units and hunt and gather as a well organised team. They are not always detered by dogs, and in fact unless your dog is fairly bad arse they may just tear the dog up pretty badly.

Like coyotes racoons not only survive in urban environments they thrive. Garbage cans are seen as endless smorgasboards(sp) to them.

I have a rather nasty looking old racoon that lives by our house.  I would have killed it long ago, but it did the only thing that could earn it a reprieve by some of the members of my family.  It had cute babies.

'Coons are one of the smartest animals on Earth.

We still have a good laugh about the time my uncle went outside at night for a nature call, butt naked, and the big male that he almost tripped over (parked on the porch) went after him. Afraid for the family jewels, he was. Woke up half the lake with his screams and cursing.

There was a funny story about Goering who liked racoon fur and bred them in cages specially for his own dresses, and the farm got bombed, so racoons escaped :)

In USSR they sometimes did interesting but strange things. For example, all European Russia now suffers from cow-parsnip, that is endemic in Northern Caucasus. It was grown as a feed crop back in the 50s at a large scale, only 10 years later they suddenly discovered that cows fed by cow-parsnip produce bitter milk, and the plant itself is extremely dangerous (it's juice inflicts severe skin burns).
