I have an Intel Bad Axe 2 Motherboard with onboard Sigmatel AC97(?) sound. I just set up the surround sound and am getting an issue that is driving me insane.

It seems that AHII does not deal well with "Layering" sound. For example, the sound of my Hurricane's engine sounds AMAZING, untill my gear goes up, at which time the game seems to turn the engine volume down in order to play the gear up sound. Also, when another plane is in close proximity, the game likewise turns my engine sound down in order to play the "external engine" sound. Same goes with the stall horn and a litany of other sounds in the game.

The result is a massive discontinuity in sound. I've even tried muting all sounds BUT my engine sound, (including guns and stall horn/flutter, which isn't practical at all), but the sound issue still occurs because the sound is still "playing" although I can't hear it. I hope you follow me here......

Is there a remedy for these sound issues?

I don't know if you have the sound dampener available on that card, but on mine if I enable it, it will automatically dampen sound after a certain volume.

Sorry, I couldn't be of more help.

The game does not alter sound volume as you have suggested.  If you have forced 5.1 surround mo,de on,then it could mess up the games 3D sound positioning via DirectSound.

I also assume you have configured the Windows default speaker system for 5.1 versusu stereo.

If you have installed custom sounds which are not mono recordings, then that will also mess up the 3D sound positioning.
