when upping 24s, or any bomber for that matter, who uses the 20-100lb bomb package and why? The only reason I can see for them is for carpet bombing spawn points.

They're more useful in carpet-bombing town strat.

You get a lot of buildings next to each other and a large area to cover. Salvoing larger bombs can kill more per bomb, but you have fewer bombs and you leave more gaps in the strat you just bombed.

Depends on your mission. Bigger bombs for bigger targets (hangars etc). Find a city strat? Take the small bombs.

Aside from the previous responses, another draw is the ambiance the effect of walking a string of 60 eggs ( 20 per buff ) across a strat can be.

We've been taking 5 - 8 formations of 17s or 24s, a couple escorts, and fly deep into enemy territory just to lay waste to the City, Grunt Training, Radar.. etc.

Strategically, it doesn't accomplish much, but it can be a lot of fun, especially when the escorts get to earn their keep by driving off the Doras, and, eventually, a few other 109s, 190s, 51s.. etc, press on their attacks and give our gunners something to shoot at.

And, after it's over, you limp home with smoke or fuel leaks, flight surfaces gone, a drone or two missing.. and your squaddies that bought it on the first run meet you in fresh fighters to drive off any pursuing enemy.

Makes you keep coming back.

A B-17 with 24 100lbrs with a salvo setting of 24 and a delay of .75 can walk the bombs from one end of a runway to the other. Set up your run from 1 sector out where a huge furball is going on and see how many you can kill on the runway:aok

Like said above, mostly for town's
But you can also use them on soft targets.

m8's m16's and such.

If you drop them in salvo's of 4-6 you can track anything.
Sometimes it better to stop* the enemy, than it is to outright slaughter tham. ;)

Ack
Forgot who said this while trying to take a base, but the quote goes like this. "I cant help you with ack, Im not in attack mode" This is with only 2 ack up in the town while troops were there, waiting. The rest of the town was down.
