Do we have any members from Atlanta?  On Thursday (6-9) I will be flying into Atlanta and staying until Saturday (6-11).  Now the Captain I am flying with is moving into his home on Thursday and Friday, so he will be airlining back home as soon as we land, and returning on Saturday and we'll fly the King Air back together...  Problem is, the group we are flying want to keep one of the pilots in Atlanta just in case, so that leaves me stuck in the city for two days (not that its a bad thing).

Anyways, I will have a rental car for the two days, and I was wondering if there was anyone in the city, or general area from AH that would be interested in getting together for some wings and beers?  I dont know anyone in the city, and i've never been there before, and I figure this would be a good place to find out.

Furthermore, are there any cool areas in Atlanta I should definately try and see or go to?  Additionally, any areas I should make sure to stay away from?

Stay away from the roads.  Traffic sucks.
Some will fall in love with life and drink it from a fountain that is pouring like an avalanche coming down the mountain

its hot as H*LL!

You might want to check out the aquarium, I've heard its pretty cool. Careful though the place is a crime ridden cesspool for the most part. But then any major city is that way.

Cav,
Here is my run down on the area which is based on family sorts of things that I've done in the area (not a definative list).  It will unfortunately be very hot this week.

Took my wife to the Georgia Aquarium last Saturday and it was really nice (and crowded).  Note that you can't take pocket knives and straws (for some reason) into the building. and the tickets are sold on a timeslot basis and can be purchased and printed online ahead of time.

Other things that come to mind are Stone mountain park (east of town on hwy78) and Six Flags (west of town on I-20).  Stone mtn has a nightly laser show in the summer that includes some fireworks (and is relatively cheap).  Underground isn't much worth going out of your way for imho.   There used to be the World of Coke near underground but I've heard that it is being rennovated or some such so check the websites before going there.

Areas to avoid:  Anything south or west of downtown (even a few blocks in some areas) although there are a number of less than safe areas scattered from around I-285 in toward town in every quadrant.

There is a bar/nightlife district in the Buckhead area north of town on Peachtree street (of which I know very little except for Fado Irish pub which has sessions on monday nights).  To the northeast there is an area called "Little Five Points" (Moreland ave and Euclid ave) where a number of pierced polka-dotted sorts hang out but I've caught some good acoustic acts at the Variety playhouse there.

Have a good trip,
Sqrl

Lived there when I was in school (Ga Tech).

Buckhead is a lively area...but only about 2x2 blocks.  Absolutely sucks driving up there, all the more so if it's during prime "bar hours".

Midtown is the, um, "colorful" area and actually has some of the best dining.  Good for laughs and people watching :D

I used to live in Virginia-Highland.  That, "Little Five Points" and Decatur are nice "college" areas.

It really all depends on where you are staying, and how much driving you are up for.  Atlanta is one of the most sprawling metropolitan areas and the commercial districts are interspersed with big residential areas.

wish I was still there...could use a night out on the town! :)
