Manned Ack vs. Ostwind gun
« on: August 08, 2007, 09:29:29 AM »

I did a search on the subject, but didn't have much success.

What is the caliber of the manned ack (soft gun)?

I had always assumed that it was a 37mm round.

I am assuming that it is a HE round.

There is a huge diffirence between the manned ack and the Ostwind gun, a few pings from the manned ack will take out a panzer, but you can shoot a panzer all day with the Ostie gun, and be lucky to get a track.

Thanks for any responses

The mannable is also a 37mm gun, however I believe it has a much longer barrel and higher muzzle velocity.

Osti is a AA gun, i believe it is HE, but  might be HE/AP mix.

the Field gun is a AA/Anti GV gun. it is API i think.

both are 37mm.

Don't forget that the Osti suffers from a small randomization of the aim point (i.e. the rounds do not always go exactly where you aim).  The ground gun does not suffer from this.  So, if you spray 20 rounds from an Osti at a tank D800 away, a fair number are going to miss.  From a ground gun, likely all 20 will hit.  More hits = more lethality.

if they are both 37mm then why does the ostie fire faster than the soft-gun battery?

Different shells do different things. Why don't the 12.7mm on the German planes  have the kick-awesomeness of the .50 cal? They're the "same size."

It all depends on the round and the gun.

id say that the 13mm on german planes are just as good as the 12,7 american.. the speed of the projectile is lower but the hitting power is imo better.

They were larger diameter, but lesser hitting power. Less charge, less kinetic energy.

However, the 13mm MG131 was a mixed belt cannon ammo. It had explosive 13mm rounds belted in with tracer, incendiary, and solid, or whatever they had in there.
