Companies seeking to cut rising health care costs are starting to dock the pay of overweight and unhealthy workers.

Clarian Health, an Indiana hospital chain, will require workers who smoke to pay $5 out of each paycheck starting in 2009. For workers deemed obese, as much as $30 will be taken out each paycheck until they meet certain weight, cholesterol and blood pressure standards.

Clarian employees will also be required to take part in a health risk appraisal that will inform the company which employees smoke.

Such appraisals are becoming a popular tool for businesses to determine the health of their work force. The type of health benefit program Clarian is setting up could become a model for businesses in coming years, analysts say.

"We anticipate that more employers will require employees to complete a health risk appraisal and participate in screenings," said Tracy Watts, a health benefits consultant for Mercer Human Resource Consulting. "We also are seeing more interest in rewards for healthy behaviors such as participating in health management-related programs and for healthy behaviors such as not using tobacco products."

A survey of nearly 3,000 employers last year by Mercer found that 53 percent required a health risk assessment of its workers. That number is up from 35 percent in 2004.

I think we should screen everyones DNA to see if they are succeptable to certain diseases.  If they are, I don't think they should get health insurance, because I don't want my money going to them.

If people don't drink purified bottled water, I think we should dock them extra pay each week too.  Because they are going to have health problems from chlorine in the future.

If they don't go to bed on time each night, dock them some more, because a person needs his sleep.  I don't want my tax money paying for their healthcare later on.

When insurance companies charge higher rates to people who have caused DUI wrecks, is that nanny statism too?  Plus, how can it be in this case if it's a private company?  Or am I missing something about the story?

Who is going to determine what the levels will be for some of these tests. How much does genetics play into things like blood pressure and cholesterol? What is an ideal weight for one person may not be so for another. Using a weight height chart is just another form of discrimination and isn't even based on the amount of work the individual may provide with the exception of the morbidly obese. An individual who is outside of the "ideal" 6% body fat index of the chart may not have any more health issues than those inside of it.

What's next a screen to see if cancer was in your family's background? It's a common screening tool for the % chance of getting it. If your parent died of cancer or diabetes should they refuse to hire you even though you display no indications of either condition?

   those same people think its okay that those who "work"in the senate earn over 180,000   a year  to work 90 days.
   believe its okay that Beer is legal and searved on our highways.  yet kills over 100,000 people  a year,
    those same people believe its okay to drug our chrildren give them riddlin and other drugs that make them zombies. that cant think for themselves, cuz they are "out of control"  sorry they are chrildren.they dont have the concept of control its up to us as parents to teach them that not drug em into oblivion.

"OBESE" is what the article referred to---"OBESE", as defined by the CDC, is a “body mass index” of 30 or better (i.e. 5 foot 9 inches, 203 pounds) I think 5/9 and 203 pounds is a bit beyond 'big boned':D, and I'm supposed to feel FINANCE one of those fat slobs as I see them walk into MacDonald's?
