This week: ALEUTIAN CAMPAIGN, Summer 43
« on: August 14, 2007, 10:56:12 AM »
June 2-3, 1942: Nearly six months to the day after Pearl Harbor, the Japanese struck again on American soil. The bombing of Dutch Harbor signalled the beginning of the Aleutian Campaign and led, in part, to the evacuation and internment of American civilians for the duration of the war.

On 6-7 June, 1942, the Japanese followed the Dutch Harbor raid with an invasion of American soil. After months of reconnaissance, they landed on Kiska and Attu Islands in the Western Aleutians, over 1,000 miles from Dutch Harbor.

Listen, just because you can't turn-fight a P-40 against a Zero, does not mean you can not kill Zeros with it.  Get your prettythang off the deck where you have zero options.  (He he zero get it.  It's a joke son, pay attention.  Im throwing 'em but you 'aint catching 'em.  The kid's about as sharp as a bag of hammers.)  Read up on the tactics the AVG used against the Zero.  Keep the fights fast, where the Zero "locks up".  Set a hard deck 8-10K, if the fight starts to get below that it is time to dive away for home.  FLY WITH A WINGMAN!!!  He may turn and avoid you, but he may have set himself up with your wingman.

Tell that to an AVG pilot and he would probably slap you silly. grumble...grumble...dang kids...grumble...grumble.[/GrumpyOldManVoice]

How about throwing in the G as a stand in for the D and F models, since the D and the F models were there during the summer of '42.

Oh wait, i see...you wanna give the Japanese side a chance =)

I could add the P-38G and the Ki-61.

Hey Fork, I think the AvA has been fun latetly.  I think that is because of the plane sets - and the low numbers - but mainly the planes.  Both sides have the planes to fight it out up high or in the dirt this week.

I think a setup that puts P40s or 38s against the 0s will force the US planes to clime high and hit and run only.  Both cant turn with 0s and god fobit the P40 takes a BB on a wing it loses every hope it had.

I'll try it, but I think it will force peole not to engage unless they have an advantage or just BnZ.

Anyway, just my opinion

This looks great.  Just like old times.  Don't be putting no 38 in there.  I wish the parents were not visiting this weekend or I would be up 24/7.

On another note A20g is a bit much is that historical?

Gotta chime in here and agree,  I think the performance is too varied to make an interesting fight.  Things change with group dynamics which I think would be more interesting, but with the relatively low numbers that tend to favor 1v1's and 2v2's I think planes with similar flight charactersitics make for better fights.  Had a couple knock down drag out fights last night F6F, vs N1k.  I lost them, but I think most people have fun when the planes allow for similar fighting styles.

Not entirely historically accurate but I think the Ki-61/Tony would add a lot to the mix.  And of course I'm a 38 junkie and always happy to have my 38G in my mix (torque makes me worthless in anything else these days. :))

I personally think the p40e is going to be the real problem in a 0 only match-up.  Although the one on one bit is fun, none of the planes you mention except for the 0 is really meant for a slow turn fight.  The 38 can do it but it was not built for it.  The good fun comes from a group of zeros intercepted by a group of p40s.  Sadly the numbers do not allow for that most of the time.  I enjoy the historical matchup in more realistic situations (a gaggle of zeros escorting some bombers and intercepted by a gaggle of p40bs).  I can remember many a good fight with that match up.
