I've always thought that being below a certain alititude only prevented you from showing up in the dar bar. And that when you flew into the radar circle of a base, you'd show up on the map as a red dot, no matter what alt you were at.

Am I confused?

You only show up as dots inside enemy radar. If you're below 500 feet you won't show up, even if inside the rings. You will, however, make the base blink when inside the radar rings, whether you're on the radar or under it.
