To go widescreen or not?
« on: August 17, 2007, 01:55:27 PM »
I'm ready to upgrade from a CRT to 19" LCD screen. Most of the screens I am seeing with 2ms refresh times are widescreen. My previous work laptop was a widescreen and it took a great deal of time for me to adjust to that. It seemed no matter what resolution I liked, it would stretch my icons horizontally (makes sense, wide screen).

The Samsung's are the ones that are garnering the rave reviews here at work. BestBuy seems to have brought their in-store prices down to match NewEgg and other online retailers. For monitors, I'd prefer to buy local, in case there's a bad pixel right out of the box. RMA's from online retailers are a hassle.

How do games like Aces High and others work with widescreen?

(Getting rid of my 19" CRT will give me a LOT of desk space back!)

LP, I bought a 19" LG LCD (regular, not WS) and I don't regret it.

IMO, you CANNOT go wrong with Samsung or LG.

I've had a Samsung 19" LCD for almost 2 years now and I am very satisfied with it. It saved a TON of space in the RV.

If your icons looked stretched, then you weren't running in a proper widescreen resolution.  My WS monitor is running in 1680 x 1050, for instance, so everything is proportionately correct.  My games all look good and normal in it, and I loves it.

I own a 19 inch Samsung SyncMaster 940 BW LCD monitor.

The default factory settings for brightness and contrast are so HIGH that I tuned them down to 20% brightness/contrast.

The best $200 purchase ever.

Wide screen for movies is great, for AH it suxxors.

Loosing those few rows of pixels in AH if you use widescreen rez will realy screw with your SA.

Tried WS for three weeks and then went to a 3to4 19" LCD, never will I go back to using WS for AH.

NEED MORE PIXELS!  But seriously, losing 100-200 pixels more often than not isn't going to make or break you dying.

That's the one I am eyeing at BestBuy.  Its $20 more than NewEgg but the convenience factor is worth buying locally.  Having had to RMA two items previously to NewEgg, its a slow process.

I was wondering how my flight sims would look on widescreen.  It seems many are flying fine with it.

I use a 22" widescreen.........once you get used to it, there is no way I'd go back to a crt.........very bright, clear and looks good...saves a whole hell of a lot of space as well....

It's a fair trade.  You lose some vertical image and gain horizontal image.
