Check out the latest LGs and Samsungs.  They are now competing over contrast-ratio.

I went from a 21" Sony G500 Trinitron flat tube to a 22" Widescreen Hanns-G.

I would never switch back to a CRT or a 4:3 aspect ratio again.  In AH, it does cut off some at the top and bottom (HTC really should do something about that, IMO), but if your particular plane has something important cut off from the default view, you can pull your head position back to bring more into view and set that as your default...that worked well for me.

Then the driver must have been horribly wrong, or something else. I have never seen that happen on any widescreen actually when you set the resolution correctly. Most monitors that are not of the dirt-cheap variety these days are good for gaming. The more expensive models are usually worse for for gaming but has alot better color and image quality.

As suggested above the samsungs are good. Dell also makes some very good models and so does apple (but at an insane cost). I have 2 x 20 inch NEC MultiSync 2090UXi lcds that are not designed for gaming but for image quality and they are awsome both for gaming and images but they cost a bundle and would be overkill for gaming.

the above screen capture is from the full back , not default position . This is the maximum cockpit view available.

I love my 22" Acer. Flying took some getting used to, but now it's great.

Most of the people having resolution problems probably have video card issues.
My mind is a raging torrent, flooded with rivulets of thought cascading into a waterfall of creative alternatives.

I have a Panasonic 22" wide screen that I really like. I don't feel like I am giving up much if any in AH. I don't remember what I am using for a resolution setting but I picked an analog wide screen one that really works well with my combination video card and monitor.

I have a 32" Sony LCD 1080P TV as my monitor. I play at 1872/990 because the viewing distance is actually 31.5 because of the frame. Not as high a resolution as some CRTs but the size makes the difference.

Turn your wide screen vertically.  You dont lose any viewable area sideways, but you gain MUCH more viewable area to the top and bottom of the screen.  I've flown like this since the spring and I'm not going back!  When I fly with the screen in the normal position, I feel claustrofobic, having been used to the ample view of the vertical screen.

Here's a screenshot from IL2FB, it works exactly the same in AH2 as well. The red box shows the visible area with the screen in the normal position. As you can see, you get about 3x the viewable area with the screen in the vertical position!

Just spun my monitor to potrait mode and here is the diff in views:

1920x1200

1200x1920

like you said, you don't lose much on the sides but you gain a ton in the vertical view.
Thanks a bunch for the tip!
