Illegal immigrant forces the issue

I am firmly in the camp with those who say her arrest is long overdue. Perhaps this incident will provoke another demostration like we saw a ~year ago. This will in turn force the issue into the '08 election, something neither of the major parties want but I believe the vast majority of Americans want.

Bully for her.

I notice she had herself a convenient anchor baby 2 years after the order for her deportation was handed down.  the anchor baby is now 8.... disgusting. both of them should be thrown out on their ears.

It's up to those that attend, but I'd refuse to go to a church that harbors
fugitives from the law.  It's not like we're sending these criminals to death camps
or anything...just sending them back home.

I think all of them should be held and housed in and all around Bush's home in Texas for a few weeks, so they can watermelon & Piss in the bushes throw their trash all over his town,  and then deported , along with their anchor babies .

We do need to reform our laws to be more accepting of the 'tired, humbled masses', but at the same time the laws are the laws, and when there are thousands of people waiting in foreign countries for legal entry, why should this lady be an exception?

Churches shouldn't be a haven for criminals, though in many ways they always have.  (I mean that in a historical sense and not as a commentary on the church or its doctrines)

Agreed places of worship should not be santuaries for criminals...

BTW.... They may be humbled masses once they get here... but on the way they are your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to be free :lol

We had a problem with 'anchor babies'. Women would arrive pregnant and have their baby in the country or else illegal immigrants would get pregnant. Their baby was automatically an Irish citizen and it's parents got residence. The bigger problem was that of course Ireland is in the EU, so it meant they had the right to reside anywhere in Europe. Some used the loophole to get residence in Britain. They would arrive heavily pregnant, have the baby here and go never to return. Madness and guaranteed to be mighty unpopular with our neighbours.

This right was enshrined in the constitution and could only be altered by referendum. So that's what was done. The child remained an Irish citizen but the parents had to prove they had a long term connection to Ireland or be deported with the child. The critics said we were all racist and that we were deporting Irish citizens to a terrible fate. But it stopped the problem in it's tracks.

Any chance of a similar common sense solution in America?

I didn't know Ireland had done such a thing (you big racists) but I have suggested that we do the same.

Well... not the same.... I think the way it should work is.... Unless one of your parents is American...  none of you are.   it doesn't matter what hospital you were born in.

Something similar could be done in the US. Changing from jus soli, citizenship based on the soil, to jus sanguinis, citizenship based on blood, would require either a Constitutional amendment, or overturning the Supreme Court ruling in United States v. Wong Kim Ark.

The problem is that the media has turned the US into a nation of extremes, so common sense is not welcome anymore. :)

rolex.. when were we ever not a nation of extremes?   We have always had contingents of constitutionalists and socialists and commies and anarchists and any number of other extreme views.

That part is healthy enough.   I am not sure who you would want to define common sense..  at least so far as politics.

It is common sense for some to give those who do nothing the money of those who do the work.   To force it from the ones who own it at the barrel of a gun.
