Anyone using the stock settings with IE is asking for trouble.  It is quite trivial to make IE as secure as any other browser.  None of them are 100% safe.

More importantly, even if you do not use IE, those settings still effect other applications in Windows.  It is important to tighten them up or you are still asking for trouble.

Sounds like somebody clicked on one of those

"Your internet connection could be faster!" windows.

All I can say is google that.

I found this comment about it, you may try this...

"I've had the same problem for a couple of weeks. Yesterday I started searching for a cure. I tried a couple of free anti-adware downloads, but nothing did any good. I was thinking that if I could find it, I could kill it. As simple as it sounds, I did a search on my hard drive for "Internet Speed Monitor" and there it was, living in my program directory (documents and settings\owner\startmenu\progr... It had its own folder and even included an uninstaller. I ran the latter, rebooted, and haven't had a pop-up since. Good luck!"

Run Hijackthis and post the result here, we can probably point out the culprit.

If its not cure by this I will do the Hi-Jack thing and post...

Is there no Big effort to stop thsi crap?  I would think the 90% of computer users are screwed..Or is it ..Whe they buy a Comp..and pay for Norton or Macafee or what ever., it guards them well enough?

You just have to be super paranoid and be careful on how you click things that pop up.

Many popups have a fake 'close this window' looking button that cause it to install on your computer.  Many people just hit okay or cancel but that can also lead to the same thing.  You really need to watch that kind of stuff to keep your windows machine clean.

Firefox may not work for some sites since most morons/web developers assume IE and all of the awful vulnerabilities that go along with it.

Did I mention windows sucks?  Too bad there is really no choice for the average computer user.  I use Solaris on Sun gear at work and Ubuntu on home built gear at home (except for AH on XP of course).  If AH worked well on WINE (or was native for Linux) I would dump Windows entirely.  Such a mess of an OS.

Yeah for anything Adaware and Search and Destroy doesn't get rid of, I use "Hijackthis".  Its a tool to help you manually remove adware/spyware, etc.  I have to deal with this sort of thing in my IT support job every once in a while even though we're behind some pretty good firewalls and filtering.

It's an ongoing battle. Organized crime is now focused on this so there is money behind it (the Storm Worm saga is quite scarey, binaries that change every 30 mins to avoid AV detection).

Generally speaking any good solution as going to cost you $$$. The freeware stuff is 'best effort', or if its good gets brought quickly and goes commercial. NOD32 is the best AV I've seen bar the corporate versions of McAfee (which you cannot buy retail).

If it is of enough concern to you I'd look at one of these: http://www.sonicwall.com/us/TZ_150_Series.html

Or if you can afford it the newer TZ180.

Schedule a "boot time" scan. That's where you get rid of the viruses. If you delete them while on system, they just reinstal
