I don't do really advanced ones I just use paintshop pro 6 and it pretty much walks you through it .  Easier than shooting down a formation of buffs really.  I've made some that you see on the boards every day because it's relatively easy for me and I enjoy helping people out.  Here's a couple I made a few years back for handy use on message boards.
