Sounds like a cat?
« on: August 23, 2007, 12:44:37 AM »
Every once and a while when i'm outside my house late at night I notice sounds that resemble the noise of a screeching cat.  It very well could be a cat, however, to the best of my knowledge none of my neighbors own cats, and i've never seen one on my street.  So what other animals may I potentially be hearing?  Do racoons, or any other critter make these cat like sqeals?  Or am I just in fact hearing a stupid cat.

My bet is a cat.

Toms tend to range a fair bit. You need a BB gun.

One night we heard piercing shrieks coming from the woods.  Everybody got all concerned.  Next day we learned a parrot got loose and was letting everybody know it was not a happy fowl.

It could be an opossum. They do a hissing growling shreik that sounds like a feral cat. One of my cats brought home a whole litter of them alive for me to cook for him. Had cute littel possums on the back porch hissing at me with him yowling to come in with them.

On the east coast if it sounds like a woman shreiking and you are in the country its a female red fox in heat. Was camping in upstate Pennsylvania when one let loose near my camp site in the dark. Thought some one was strangling and beating to death a woman. Was out in the bushes stumbling around for hours trying to find the body.

Next morning I was talking to some locals who said the foxes were breeding this time of year and the females in heat would scare the heck out of ya in the dark and you could hear them for miles. Fortunatly this was long ago before cell phones and I didn't call in a 911 and get half the county into the bushes..........:huh

It's Deer Sex.  Male deer have barbs on the tip of their noodle.  So sex is very painful for the female.

Yet the stupid critters still breed like rabbits.

There's a quite a few birds that can make some surprisingly un-bird-like sounds.    We had some bird, maybe an owl, around for a summer when I was young and it absolutely sounded like a fighting cat.

I grew up in the woods.  I got a better education then any boy scout could dream for.

I knew the Deer screamed during sex.  It was a simple thing to find out why.

If I had any money, I'd be willing to bet that this is what he's hearing.  It almost sounds like someone stepped on a cat's tail, right?
