Immersion...any place for it?
« on: August 23, 2007, 02:38:39 PM »
I came to this game through a friend, and am new, and am enjoying it.

But I was surprised when I came to realize as I flew my 190 that my closest ally was an F4U. I then realized what should have been obvious all along, but that this is essentially just dog fighting for the sake of dogfighting with little heed to history. I have to admit I was disappointed, as I assumed it would at the very least be axis opposing allied aircraft...

Well then I dug around and found the axis and allies arena, but no one uses it. Is there any place for immersion? Any squadrons out there that fly Luftwaffe planes exclusively so at least hook up with other pilots who are flying similar aircraft?

I am really enjoying the game play itself, but as a noob I was wanting to know if there was any place for some historical accuracy in this game, or is that a dead horse?

We try to use it as much as possible.  It is the only place I fly.  You just need to step up and start flying in it.  Soon others arrive.  I would not play at all if not for the AvsA or what used to be called the combat theatre.

Look for the scenarios when they come up.  Those are the real interesting bits.

The MA is very much an anything goes arena. The AvA and special events are where you'll find the more historically accurate type of gameplay. There are also squads that typically fly only certain types of aircraft in the MAs. It is very much what you make of it.

btw, Welcome to hell for dweebs. :)

If you wan't immersion/historical situations, scenarios are the only way to go.

Go here:  http://ahevents.org/pacific-theatre/current-or-next-scenario-3.html  to see the current upcoming scenario.

Snapshot events, Friday Night Squad Ops (have to be in a squad, though), and many other "events" use historic setups.

For now, if you want THAT much immersion, find a wingman. Join a squad. Get somebody that will fly your way, or shares the same interests. I know JG11 is exclusively Luftwaffe, and there are others that fly the LW planes more than any other nationality (Grunherz comes to mind, I think).

Until you get to know some folks better, don't be afraid to ask a 190 you see flying nearby you "hey, so-and-so, mind if I wing up with you?"

There is a lot to be had in this game. I don't consider winging with dissimilar aircraft a detraction, myself. I would suggest having fun in whatever way you like, but keep in mind that everybody wants to have their own kind of fun, and the F4u next to you might *want* to wing with a 190.

I wing with folks more because of the pilot, not the plane.

I appreciate the responses. I guess I will just enjoy the arenas for what they are and get into the historical scenarios when they are available.

Thanks again guys, appreciate it!

Without a doubt Scenarios are best for immersion here.  We have a great CM team that puts many hours of work together to design and setup a scenario.  It's also thankless work that goes unoticed but by those of us who fly Scnearios on a regular basis.

Visit ahevents.org to get an idea of what goes on there.

The upcoming Scneario in October Der Grosse Schlag appears to be the biggest that Aces High has ever experienced.

Let us not forget  that "winging " with dissimmilar aircraft has its advantages.
Each plane carrying its own unique "personality", and each situation being different, its giving your opponents that much more to think about.
combine that with individual flying skill and you add yet another component to the equation.

The AvA and the SEA are where some of us call home, and the MA is just that.... the MA, but that doesn't mean it can't be fun as well.

Also, there is ongoing development on Combat Tour which, as described on the BB, will be more "immersive." Just don't sit on the edge of your seat for a release date.

I concur with the recommendation to sign up for Der Grosse Schlag.

The Combat Tour, if it lives up to its hype, will be the ultimate immersion geek arena. A dynamic "EAW" type of gameplay, with all the major roles played out by human players, crossed with a RPG type of pilot-experience management....

...now, if it only comes out...

Schutze check the BBS forum FSO/ Friday night Squad Ops. Many squads will adopt you for this weekly event, it is massively fun, historic, and well run/organized. It runs for 3 weekends on, then one off (we're entering a break so not another for a week and a half bit sorry).

I treat the MA's as practise for FSO and other events :)

Schutze, what they are saying, and yet not saying is this.

FSO (fri squad ops) is a 1 life event. (Big immersion helper)
You die, your done for the night, no reups. This really can add pucker factor, as well as makes you think twice before going for a HO shot.

FSO sends out orders to the squadrons, they have to try to accomplish those orders the best they can. Can be anything from sink the enemy carrier to defend a base or Strategic object.

FSO is almost always going to have a bomber or strike squadron, with other squadrons assigned to sweep ahead or escort. The other side will of course be trying to intercept.

FSO is always going to be axis vs allies, we all take turns changing sides between frames. So most of us will fly Allies for one set, then switch to Axis for the next. No P51's fighting P38's.

It also has short icon range, so enemy fighters are going to pop into view at 3k out or less instead of 6k. This makes furballs much more like the original.
Where one minute the sky is full of planes, the next minute its just you and him and no other planes in sight.

It is in my opinion the very best flying that Aces High has to offer.
If you want to try it, you need to contact a squadron that is active ahead of time.

Ohhh yes as you can see yes I'm a bit enthusiastic about FSO, but I earned that right.  :)
