SKS and AK-47 owners
« on: August 24, 2007, 02:21:17 PM »
I grew up with guns and learned to shoot when I was young, and growing up I had a few friends with SKS rifles. They were fun to shoot and we always had a good time. Well, I never owned a gun myself. So back in February I went to go buy a SKS and ended up splurging and buying a Romanian GP-WASR-10, I love it. I really enjoy shooting it, Its it great shape and is really accurate.

Well last week, I came across a bubba(d) Chinese SKS. Its in ok shape, black side-folder stock with a B-square scope mount. It came with a detachable 30-round mag, which I quickly switched back to the 10-round stationary magazine.

But my question is here, I really want to turn it back into its orignal form with a wood stock or possibly a "sportster" with a hunting rifle type stock. None the less, I dont want to keep pumping money into the local gun store, but Im kind of cautious of purchasing anything gun related online.  Well Ive looked at plenty of websites, most look shotty or shady, I'm kind of lost when it comes websites. I discovered the SKSsurvivor forums, but I haven't registered because some of the things I've read there makes me leery of registering.

Any help?

I'll post some pics later.
There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!

I start all my online gun research with theboxotruth.com and chuckhawks.com.  Both are extremely practical and comprehensive.

I have bought all kinds of stuff from them and never had any issues. They will have all kinds of stuff for your SKS.

I've bought tons of stuff from this place over the years. Never had a problem and service has always been good. They do spam your mailbox with catalogs though.

For a good stock you might want to try either http://www.cabelas.com or http://www.midwayusa.com as both have SKS stocks. Also, check http://www.k-var.com as they've got both SKS and AK parts. Cabela's does have an SKS sporter-type Monte Carlo stock for a rightey at $50. The part # is XW-22-5766. They've also got an SVD (dragunov) type rig for a bit more.

How's the WASR? Most of what I've heard about them hasn't been terribly nice. Things like the scope rail on the receiver's left side being out of alignment, cheap stampings that dent easily, bolt carriers sticking as the weapon cycles. I've been debating between a WASR and one from Arsenal, but I can't find an Arsenal.

My brother bought an SKS about 6 years ago, I was surprised at how straight the thing shot.  Point and pull!

Most of the plastic SKS stocks are junk. None of them have a crossbolt AFAIK, so they will need to be glass bedded for best accuracy. I had a butler creek monte carlo on mine but went back to the original wood stock.

Nefarious,

You've been given some good info on places for accessories here. Any of the major places would be good. Just get a stock that fits you. I really like my sks but the original stock is just too darn short. I may get another one myself sometime.

My late son was an absolute AK junkie so I have his rifles, which are a Krebs Custom AK-74 and a Polish PKMS Underfolder AK47.  He had an AK 103 and his first SAR-1 as well

He spent a lot of time researching and this crowd knows it's stuff.  Lots of folks willing to help and guys know where to look for bits and pieces.
