Although there were times when he thought he might die after his light plane crashed in the Southern Alps, Richard Bateman undertook an agonising eight-kilometre walk through rugged country to raise the alarm. The 27-year-old flight instructor got out his survival kit, taped his scalp back on, and set out to get help for himself and his student, pilot Nick Eagleson.
