Honeymoon: Australia or America or Europe?
« on: August 31, 2007, 04:08:57 PM »
There really is too much choice these days. My mum and dad spent a week on the East coast of England when they married, 40 years ago. :D

Anyway, I'm trying to come up with ideas for my honeymoon in about a years time. We have 3 weeks, about £4000 ($8000) and we've narrowed our choice to just the three continents:

Europe - Interail do a First Class ticket around Europe - France, Germany, Hungary, Czech Republic, Croatia, Italy. Good opportunity to pretend I'm rich and be seen in all the right places. But Europe is really accessible to us Brits these days - already been to Budapest and Berlin in the last couple of years - could see the rest over time.

America - not sure, but neither my fiancee or myself are beach people - at least not for longer than a 2-3 days. America seems to be a varied place with lots to do, so perhaps it would suit us.

Also I could hire one of these Yank big engined hotrods, drive to a shooting range and try to empathise with what Lazs has been banging on about for all these years. :D A range in Las Vegas looked interesting, although haven't asked fiancee about that...

Australia - I can't scuba dive for medical reasons, but I surf a little and we both love the sea. Snorkeling off the Great Barrier Reef looks great, and a boat trip around the Hamilton Islands looks great. Maybe also visit Cook Islands?

So if the natives of these places want to help me out and suggest some activities they've done or just give their opinion, that would be grand. :D Also, has anyone tried to go around the world in 3 weeks - I'm thinking it would be hectic and not restful.

One of these days I'll surprise the wife with a trip to Fanning Island.    I'd also like to go to New South Georgia/Antarctica before my time is up.

Well, I'm not really sure about the Australian exchange rate, but given that it's a continent a bit out of the ways, I wouldn't be suprised if America winds up being the cheapest destination for you, if you'd like to make your money stretch.

There is an awful lot to do here, and an awful lot to see, but it is so varied that you really might be well served going to the library and finding a picture book of American cities/regions.  Some may suit your taste more than others.  We have everything from rainforests to deserts to everglades (read: nice looking swamps), to mountains, to hills, to steppes, to, well, you get the idea.  Everything.  But, most of the time, it is a very long hike from one typography to the next.

OTOH, if you have three weeks to do it, you could conceivably spend one in different regions and get a grand taste of our nation.  If I had to pick your three sites, I'd say:

1.  NYC (It's like Paris, no matter how much you might hate the place, everyone's got to see it once);

2.  A southern state (I'm partial to North Carolina in the Charlotte region, myself - the people are friendly, the music and food are great, the views are spectacular, and the temperature is reasonable).  Charleston, South Carolina, is also a nice place to visit (you can see the Yorktown there, if you'd like to make a historic stop).

3.  Somewhere out west - like Las Vegas, or California.

The nice thing about this set up is that you could probably swing it on your budget, assuming you can get some good flight deals.  NYC is very pricey, but the south is certainly not, and Las Vegas has to be the cheapest place in the world to visit (well, to get, and stay there - not necessarily to play ;) )

Hope this helps,

I wanted to give North Korea a try, but my wife shot me down. But honey, where else can you visit a real life communist, Stalinist style dictatorship these days? And no, Cuba doesn't count.

For my honeymoon i chose the place that was easyest and the least stress for the both of us so we could just enjoy without too much hassle at airports, timezones and whatnot. We chose to go a week on the boat just the two of us with dad as babysitter.

If i would have gone with my other choise we would have done the complete opposite and gone somewere exotic that we would prolly not get many chanses to go later. Australia is one such place. Not because america is a bad chose, but because going there is not really as long and "complicated" as Australia so you could actually even do a weekend in the US... going to australia for a weekend is close to impossible. :D

Short answer? Europe if you just want to relax and have alot of time to explore instead of spending time in airports etc, or Australia.

hmmm how about Honeymoon in Hawaii ?
never been there, but seen alot of movies & photographs and
it looks really great. Rent a house & boat there and explore the
islands.

Or rent a SuperYacht like the 123.00 ft 'Tilac'

this is the yacht from my Chef.  Port is located in Palma, Mallorca.
In 2003 he invited me & my Girlfreind to join him on board for 11 days,
it was a present. Especialy if you dont have to pay a cent ;)

The price? renting this Yacht for 11 days & cruising around the  Mediterranean See
is aprox $200000

heh ok ok i still think Hawaii would be great :D

When's the wedding, depends on that. But you really should come to Finland, just to see what else Europe has to offer besides the Central European attractions. ;)

eurotrain sounds awesome, but not for a honeymoon ~ too much movement required.  Make that an anniversary trip, or just regular ole vacation.

The hotrod/US sounds great ~ also not for a honeymoon. land on east coast ~ buy the hot rod ~ drive all the way across (stopping whereever you wish). ditch the car on the west coast & fly home.  Also too much movement for honeymoon.

For honeymoon ~ no matter where it is that y'all choose:  no work or movement involved on your (or her) part... just spend the entire time at one locale relaxing & enjoying the honeymoon.  plenty of time for traveling around later. :)
