Beware the newest road hazard

It's time to take an extra ounce of caution, especially on the Highways and Freeways. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070901/ap_on_re_us/mexican_trucks

Many states have fought this for years. Now, we'll see why...and I hope, that none of you who read this, are victims of what could happen.

Have no doubt...the mexican's will not care about things like road safety, or American laws. Watch yourselves out there.

That is a valid concern. We have the same problem in Finland with the Russians. Just less than two weeks ago one of them caused a deadly accident. One time there was a convoy of 3 of them and they were stopped because they had trouble staying on the road, all them totally drunk. The list is endless...

BAH! This problem has persisted for YEARS!!
Its only recently that the media and the general public have become aware of it due to several horrific accidents involving mexican drivers that couldnt qualify to ride my nieces tricycle much less handle 40 tones and 70 feet of rolling mayhem!

The trucking industry has been fighting this  for several years. Mexican trucks go around weigh stations and DOT checks or wait till after dark when they close and drive right on by.
Wehn I still drove and we saw a mexican truck we gave it a HUGE berth. the tires are prone to blowouts and if they are recaps they can literally come thru your windshield and kill you. The maintenance is WAY below standard and alot of the safety systems required on U.S. trucks dont even exist.

The drivers are any warm bodied fool they can get to slide behind the wheel and get the rig moving. Scary indeed. I've personally seen these jokers high as a kite on meth trying to get a load from Laredo, TX to Chicago or N.Y. and they will try and drive straight thru. :O
Anybody living in Missouri/Illnois should be extra cautious because thats usually where the drugs wear off and they start getting really stuck on stupid. I've seen ALOT of em crash in St. Louis area.

NAFTA in action.  Presumably U.S. trucking companies can now drive all over Mexico too.  And Canada, of course.

Not so. Thsi is the next to last paragraph in the link.

However, the agency said it must still wait for final report by the inspector general and for Mexico to begin giving U.S. trucking companies reciprocal access before the program can begin.

However there was some hope in that news link.

In addition, law enforcement officials have stepped up nationwide enforcement of a law that's been on the books since the 1970s requiring interstate truck and bus drivers to have a basic understanding of written and spoken English.

We have this problem in the UK with drivers coming from the continent.  It is harder for them here, because they are used to driving on the wrong side of the road in their own country.

That's true, Wildcrd, and it's pretty much obliterated the container hauling business from our ports such as Long Beach and Oakland. However, we are gonna see it on an unprecedented scale, now.
