P-51 Advice
« on: September 02, 2007, 04:00:50 PM »
Hey guys, I'm looking to start flying the P-51 this tour as a fighter and as a attacker/escort for NOE missions specifically, but I really want to be able to use it for a little of everything.  So, I am just looking for any advice you guys can give me.  Stuff like good convergence settings depending on the style of flying used, when to use flaps, possible fuel/ammo load outs, and just all around advice.  The more detailed the better.  Oh, and I have read soda's thing also.

Second, if anyone can post some links to 51 sorties, especially ones within the 7-10 kill range, just so I can watch a little and familiarize myself with it.  Double digit kill sorties would be the best, but anything would do lol.

Lastly, any advice on how best to drop ords with the 51?  Say I'm attacking a tank and/or a FH.  Whats the best approach?  Best angle to dive in on, altitude to release and pull up, lead for ords, etc?  I have a hard time hitting stuff with rockets/and bombs.

Thanks a lot guys

I'm not the best when it comes to P-51'S but I do know this, KEEP IT FAST!. The P-51 loves speed. One of the biggest mistakes I see people doing in a P-51, some of the newer peple that is, is they think that it's the best turner, best overall plane there is. Pony's can't turn with a spit! so don't try to. However, it is one of the best overall. Good load outs, great speed, great range, great firepower. As for dive-bombing, I suck at it too :lol  . Sometimes I get lucky, but I find that if you come straight down on your target and put the gunsight just slightly ahead of it you'll hit.

Here's a write-up i did for my squad.

P-51 Guide

As for ord, i dont think there's anything specific for the P51. Dive bombing and rocket attacks are pretty much the same for all fighters.

ok im a pony dweeb so  as the others mentioned keep her fast, dont over manouver, try to fight using angles rather than pure tnb, learn some overshoots you will need em, one example is a doulbe oblique overshoot. A slashing attack is most effective when you are outnumbered, work your way down from the top. Remember the mustang has sluggish acceleration. I will glady help you pm me to schedule a training session or da session!

actually you are mistaken sir, p51 at high energy fight can turn with every spit except 1,5,8.  14s are easy to turn with, 16s arent much harder. 9 are fiesty but can also be dealt with.(this being high energy)

cheers

Had my first "ace" sortie today in the D!  6 kills within a matter of a couple of minutes.  Defended a base in blue against a I think bish carrier attack and just took off, gained some alt and then just slashed through over the water and then over the base clearing people's six.  I was so happy lol.  Would have tried for more, but was bingo fuel and wanted to land a all time pr lol.  Anyways, looking forward to getting better in this ride.

Oh, and before I flew that sortie, I changed my convergence to 350 or 375 forget which, and I waited till I got closer.  Guess that makes a difference.

High energy is the P-51's area ... not true for Spits (except the 14) ... if the P-51 gets into an actual turn fight (with equal E) with any Spit ... the P-51 is dog food.

So does anybody have some pony sorties with a good amount of kills they would be willing to put up?  I would really appreciate it.

Thanks.
