worlds largest RC plane?
« on: September 04, 2007, 08:21:29 PM »
This is supposed to be the worlds largest RC plane.  Sweet looking B-29 but I would think UAVs like GlobalHawk would be considered the largest.

In WWII didn't they have full sized B17s loaded with explosives and wired for Radio remote? Pilots jumped once they were up and away.

Although that 1/5 scale b29 is sweet.

Yes and a Kennedy was killed in one.

Some of the UAVs are bigger.

World's biggest RC would perhaps rather be one of those new spyplanes?
It was very interesting to carry out the flight trials at Rechlin with the Spitfire and the Hurricane. Both types are very simple to fly compared to our aircraft, and childishly easy to take-off and land. (Werner Mölders)

The site labels it as "World's Largest Model Aircraft". Since they are using the term model, not R/C, it is in a different ctegory than UAV's and what have you.

I'd like to point out that modern UAVs like the global hawk cannot be "Flown" by a pilot from the ground.  They are merely givin instructions by the operator and the computer does the actual flying.  Not sure if this makes a difference in the whole "largest" thing or not but it is a little different than an R/C air craft.

So they don't have anything that can be "flown"?
If they do, I'm applying for a job :D

Joe Kennedy's plane was the Navy version of the B-24: otherwise, yeah it was a very big RC plane.

My grandfather was a crew chief for one of the B-17s that was chosen for "Operation Aphrodite."  It was a clever idea to make use of and get rid of aircraft that had reached their operational lifespan.  It was considered an operational failure.

ALSO...

What about that R/C B-52 that some dude built and crashed a few years ago?  That thing was huge too and it has eight actual turbojets on it.

The smaller UAVs are actually "piloted" but bigger ones like the UCAV or GH are given a flight path or basic set of instructions to follow and follow it, it does.
