Spit Mk IX vs. the Split S
« on: September 04, 2007, 04:20:38 PM »
Yesterday I was in a Spit IX and while in a dogfight the challenger got on my six and was closing fast, so I did a split s & well… both of my wings popped off. [shrug]

Is this prevalent w/ the spits or just this variation??

I can't remember having lost my wings in any Spit for any reason but enemy fire.

Shouldn't happen unless you exceeded 11 Gs.

Only Spit's shedding wings that I know of in reality were either Mk Vs with the extra light elevators that could be easily pulled to exceed 11 Gs in a fast dive or Spits that had bomb shackle failer and retained bombs on their pull out of a slope-bombing run.

I don't know what the deal was in real life, but in this game, you can rip the wings off Spitfires if you manuever hard enough...  I've only noticed it in the 16, but that probably has more to do with my going faster in a 16 than with any structural superiority of the other varients.

Yeah this was really weird.

Spi IX full throttle (using positive G's, duh) in a Split S manuver.

All I can theink of is that I pulled a Split S really quick!! Which was awesome except for the wings popping off.

You're apparently also good enough to make me realize that we now have an experimental Merlin XX-powered spitfire in addition to a reconnaissance PR.XI in the game.

Accelerate to full speed, fully stressing the airframe, then SNAP the stick back.

You can break wings off lots of birds that way.

Be a bit more gentle with the stick, listen for that tortured metal groan that tells you "EASY on the stick here or I'm DEAD"

Ripped wings off a 38 - impossible as that was.
