i could do with some advice on my next cpu upgrade.

the 2 choices i have i think are.

AMD Athlon64 6400 Socket AM2 Dual Core Processor LINK
Intel Core2 Quad 6600 2.4Ghz LGA775 Processor LINK

im upgrading from an AMD 4000.

At the moment Intel is on top performance wise.

Which socket design is your current motherboard? If it's a socket AM2 then then you should be able to fit the newer Athlon, whereas the Core Duo will require a new motherboard. If however you have an older Socket 939 motherboard you'll need to upgrade whichever you choose.

Overall the Core Duo seems to get the best press. I have an older 4300 model which I overclock with the stock heatsink, and it runs Aces High fine.

i got a 939 mobo atm but i plan on getting a new mobo and ram.

Intels have a slight performance edge right now, but the best bang for the buck ar the AMD dual cores imho. About 100 bucks less for an SLI capable (not necessary right now) board, and about 100 bucks less then a comparable Intel. My new build here in a couple weeks is going to be an Asus M2NE SLI deluxe, AMD 6000 X2 cpu, 2 gigs of Kingston ram, and a GF 8600 GTS (DX10 capable). The full package falls in at just shy of 500 bucks.
