VOX not loud enough
« on: September 11, 2007, 01:15:02 AM »
Hi, I'm having trouble with my VOX as apparently it's not loud enough. I have all setting in windows to high with mic boost on and have voice settings on in AHII on high but it is still not loud enough.

Computer details below that may be relevant to the problem:

OS: Windows Vista
CPU: AMD Athlon x 2 (Duel Core)
Sound Card:  Creative SB X-Fi

Unfortunately, Microsoft removed DirectSound from Vista and all the game sound calls are being forced through the regular Windows sound API.  We have less control over sound in Vista than we did before.  Not much we can do about it.

you could try turning all game sounds down, then turn the "Master" volume up on your computer. You might pick up a speaker hum, but it should make it loud enough

I had the same problem when I first started.  Like stated above, I turned everything else down and turned up the speakers.

Some game noises are too loud anyway.  Slats on 109s and LA s always startled me at default sound levels.

Try it.  It worked for me.

Oh sorry, I didn't explain myself properly. I was meant to say that my VOX is not loud enough (my vox to others is very quiet and not many people can hear it). I hope that this will clear it up and skuzzy might be able to give me the answer.

You never mentioned it, is the microphone too far from your mouth? I have mine less than half a foot from my mouth and everyone hears me fine.

He means on the actual headset line which runs into the Microphone slot. Is there a volume control on the actual line? If there is, is the volume low or high?

How does it work if you just record your voice with the Windows sound recorder?

Repeat of a post in hardware and software.

I forget the exact process but you can calibrate in windows.

For a while my squaddies told me i sounded like i was gargling on razorblades everytime i would say something so i fixed it.

In windows, i forget where, there is an option to calibrate the microphone, where you're supposed to read a paragraph, and you have level bars indicating the volume.

What i did was read the paragraph louder than i normally speak in the game so the volume lights would be near maxed out in red with the microphone volume on the "volume control" maxed out.

Now i set the mic slider on the volume control between the 1st and 2nd line without boost, so when i speak, i don't hear myself in the headphones, but when i do the sound recorder test, and tune to myself in game, i'm 5x5.

You might have to do it a couple of times to get it right.

Edit----The sound recorder test is a good indicator of weather or not your too loud, or too low.

Just curious, do people normally hear themselves through there headphones or speakers when they talk into the mic?
