When turning on wifes comp you can hear a clicking noise and the black screen comes up and says primary hd not found. Does this mean the primary hd is completely fried?? Thanks for the bad news <>

Yip. Thats why I use a http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/products/external/freeagent_pro_data_movers/

Set it up and never worry again. Backups happen real time.

I've lost too many drives now to not be protected. It's a painful lesson but one to learn from.

My Seagates are in a mirrored Raid 1 setup, plus I us MS Sync Toy to send backups to a third HDD after virus/spyware scans as a protection from potential viruses, etc on the Raid array. I also periodically do DVD backups of important stuff.

Thanks for the replies, I figured stuff was lost but guess what? She does back everything up also, just a matter of doing the all the work to get it up and going again. Have ordered new hd so will wait for it to come and get it up and running again. Thanks

Good for her. Imagine if you had your family digital photos and vids on that machine and it wasn't backed up. There goes those precious "kodak" moments.

I have 6 years of memories on my machine and I could not imagine what my wife would do if I told her they just went poof...

Okay got the computer up and running again, didn't mention this before but had two hard drives hooked up and come to find out it was the E:\ slave drive that went out. Question is: how come on bootup the motherboard would not see the C:\ drive and boot into windows even though it was the E:\ drive that was faulty? I thought maybe it was because I had the ribbon cable hooked out of sequence but that was not the case. It is an IDE cable with two drives hooked into it. Any thoughts? Thanks

that can happen. Sometimes the other hard drive just locks up the bus.

I've had two western digital hd's , (80gb & 30gb), go in the last two weeks. Both were slave drives. The 30gb kept the system from booting. I took it out, and the system booted just fine after that. Both drives were freebies taken out of older systems. Personally I never recommend/buy Western digital - too many failures... I like Seagate and Maxtor.
