so what am I missing here...
« on: September 15, 2007, 09:37:37 AM »
A recent thread pointed out that me getting my news from the BB here was useless and unproductive...  I admit that I do listen to NPR and a right wing station during the day on an off in my work car when going from place to place... I do watch cnn and fox for a few hours during huge events like war and major elections...

But... on the face of it... it sounds good...  I mean, how could anyone get anything important from a BB fer chrisakes!

Follow the links.... you can pretty much ignore "news" that is not linked but..  if someone says something and links it.. you can be sure someone else will link to the opposite view...

My contention is that this BB is unlike any other.. at least, none other that I have seen...

It has an attitude... a "prove it" attitude... a soundbite won't get it.  Name someone who hasn't learned something from this one.

It has people from all over the world... it has left and right and center.

How can looking at articles and links from every position not be learning?   If you listen to npr or fox... all you get is their opinion so far as I can see.. their politics taint every thing that they say.

hell...  I just got linked to a terrorist site that the guy who linked thinks are just ordinary folk... doing what you or I would do in their position.

I find that when it comes to talking to folks.. that the diversity of opinions I get here make me more informed than them... they seem very on dimensional in their thinking... be it left or right or even moderate... they have their favorite news sources and..  their favorites all have one thing in common... they agree on everything.

Plus... until you put it out there... how do know your not just being a parrot?    Until you have debated (not watched some hand picked people debate on tv)... until you have debated... how do you know you have thought it out?

I don't think you're missing a thing lazs. As you said there are people who post here with widely varying backgrounds. Hardly an opinion expressed here goes unchallenged. The Internet makes it easy to discuss just about any subject with expert opinions in any field literally at our fingertips. Should this board disappear I will miss it.

AH BB is one of my daily visits, but frankly i cant remember one BBS Topic
who actualy changed my mind on anything. It ends allways into
"i know it better" or so.
But debating things in real life, thats another story, here you have to have
the knowledge of what you are talking about , if not you end up just listening.
This kind of debating actually can change my mind or other minds
.You know there is no copy & past in real life heh.
the BBS here is like a Newspaper Frontpage, BIG FONTS but everything else
is hot air or comic & nonsens ;)

but its worth for a daily visit, like the frontpage.

New York Times has been saying for decades "All the news that's fit to print"....Well..WHO the F decides what news is? If it's not in the Times or the Wash Post, it is ignored by ABC, CNN, etc...and if all you do is watch Katie each night, or CNN, or FOX as well, you're seeing maybe 5% of all the stuff going on out there--as what they put on tube has ratings, political bias, etc factored in. EVERY %^^%$^% second these arses are talking about Britney @###$@ Spears on national newcasts, important stuff is being ignored to make way for it.  I have 15 or 20 places I look to find REAL, factual info, and it amazing to see how different sources treat the same story

I don't know that anyones mind is changed but I am saying that nearly all of us... including me... have been able to think out our positions...  I know that, if not changed.... my opinions on subjects have been highly modified by this BB at times.

I have heard a few people say that they have changed their minds on subjects tho...gun control has been one... I would say that global warming is another... lots of things.   If not changed... at least challenged.

I like the attitude here... I would even say that the moderation is the best around..

I'm convinced that my position (on anything) is the correct one.  Reading through these threads hasn't changed my mind on anything that I already believed, but has at least made me believe that the persons holding different conclusions than mine may not all be total dummies, and they're probably more deserving of respect than I previously afforded them.

At the risk of sounding like a Lazs cheerleader, I agree fully.  I'm nt saying everything always goes my way, far from it, but I've felt my minority views on a couple of subjects get a generally fair shake, even if I don't change anyone's mind.

There's a comfort and succor to only talking with people who agree with you, but it's an empty comfort, and provides no nutritional value.  I could go to an atheist board, for example, and be part of a "yeah, me too" forum where everyone pats each other on the back, same as anyone here could go to a church one and get the same on the other side of the issue.

But it's an empty experience.

It's like the admonition to pilots about staying current.  Since their checkride, have they really racked up 100 hours of flying experience?  Or have they flown the same one hour flight 100 times?

I think what you're missing is chairboy's lips firmly attached to your ***.

Maybe.  OJ might also be innocent.

I've learned a few things here and the discussion, when civil, can be thought provoking. For the most part, it's entertainment and some what interactive.
DEFINITION OF A VETERAN
A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life."

This board is very unique. You will hear several sides of an issue here. It's sort of like everyone's mini blog.
My mind is a raging torrent, flooded with rivulets of thought cascading into a waterfall of creative alternatives.

this bb is good for opinion on current events... the diversity and international input on current topics is a plus... it widens my scope.  and i agree the moderation here is very balanced and tolerant of diverse views
