Battle of Britain / Classic movie
« on: September 18, 2007, 04:23:04 AM »
Ladies and gents...

Been watching the "Dogfights" series on the history chanel...
Love the Europeen battle scene in the movie Pearl Harbour...
Was impressed with Saving Private Ryan and freaked out when I watched the Band Of Brothers....

I've seen the Memphis Belle and enjoyed it !
Battle of Midway was also good....
Tuskeegee Airman was also pretty good !
Dark Blue Skies was sharp too !

Now the classic Battle of Britain ?
I enjoy watching it and so on....

With today's movie technology and few spitfires(50 worldwide), why is it that there is no "remake" of that film ?
According to documentaries, the BoB was a "flop" at the box office when it came out !
With the computerized animation capabilities and sound effects, I would freak out having tha chance to see a remake of that movie !!!!

So you guys outhere(overseas/ Great Britain / England / France), have you ever asked yourselfs that question ?
Isn't there any movie producers like "Spielberg- Tom Hanks"  that would be able to provide a budget to make such a movie ?

I've been told that the big boys to make such movies are in the United States and not in the U/K ! Is that a valid comment ?
Here in Canada, when war doumentaries/movies come out, they're ok but
not of quality like the big league in the U.S.A !!!!

Last weekend I attended a Battle of Britain memorial(Ottawa, Canada) where the owner of 3 fighters flew and landed. (SPITXVI-Huricane- P51)
What a sight it was !!!! I asked Mr Mike Potter if he was ever approached to have his collection available for movie parts.
He advised that he was asked in the past. Apparently the British were looking into it....

Any of you guys outhere in Britain / France / England can comment on this ??

tks
Phil

There is nothing wrong with the original Battle of Britain, it is a great movie.

Agree... except for the music which was more blase' than rousing, or blood stiring.

Still pull out the DVD every other month or so to watch it.

yep, would end up starring Ben Affleck, Tom Cruise and Keannu Reeves. Costarring Jessica Simpson as Petunia.

A classic love story where American Volunteers single handedly win the Battle of Britain, all the while caught up in a nasty love  triangle.

I agree with Xargos, nothing wrong with it as it is.

FWIW, I would rather watch the 1969 real aerial footage over the current generation of CGI cartoon garbage we see today.

Be careful about taking films for history.  Most of these aren't bad, but they are only renditions of history and all leave something to be desired.

Not as a historical comment but purely technical, did you know that one of the main 109's used in BoB wasn't even a 109?  Its a Spanish made HA 1112 from after the war.  Its currently in the Kalamazoo Air Zoo.

Brought up the question and have lots of respects towards the classic original Battle of Britain movie !

I would love to see a movie regarding that war period (Air battles) with today's movie tech and tools.
I 'm sure the outcome would be good !
We still have few WWII birds flying around etc....

Just a thought !

Salute !

Wait a sec... just read this properly...

They used real aircraft for the filming of the BoB, many genuine veteran pilots... over 100 real aircraft, how could CGI improve it?!

With Hollywood being so bored that they're chunking out R rated movies similar to muffins in a baking factory I would dread the day that anybody decides to "re-make" this spectacular film.

I was 10 when I saw the original in the theater. It was no "flop" to me then or now. CGI would ruin it as they'd have A2A at 100ft with impossible ACMs.

Has it been released on DVD in its full length? The only DVDs I have seen are the horrid short version.

If you like BoB make sure and find a way to watch the “Peace of Cake” mini series as well.
