Pilot Wound in 38J

I noticed tonight, in a 38J I recieved a pilot wound but there wasn't a hole in the canopy.  Its a minnor thing.

Not every pilot wound comes through the canopy. In the P-38, there's no engine block to stop a bullet from hitting your spleen as well.

Correct. Same can happen rather often in the 110.

This is true, however there was a crap-load of ammo and guns up there.  My only complaint about all the 38's is the PW model.  It seems far too touchy.

Well, alright, there's also through the bottom of the seat, up through your feet, into your back from below... ;) Though the last is the least likely due to seat armor.

The P-38 was actually one of the most susceptible to pilot wounds. They added an armor plate behind the guns to try to reduce the number of injuries to the pilot.

EDIT: Basically, if he has a film he can send it to HTC and they can extract the exact trajectory, velocity, and penetration of the round to see if the bug exists or if he was shot in the butt. It isn't all that big of a deal, though.

Actually a pw is a big deal, especially if it's not supposed to have happened to that pilot.  Every time you black out, is a time where someone can kill you, and if you don't make it back to base you die.  

So yeah, I would say its a big deal.

I don't know, but I think engines here seem to play a big part in stopping bullets. Take a shot from a spits 20mms along your 3-9 and watch an engine die..and never get a PW. However, from any other angle, up-dwn-front-back the cockpit's a bullet magnet. I got a PW from a spits .303cals, with him on my low 6 and me pulling away from him fast (he had just immellmanned up to me). Dont know how a .303 can get through that seat armour, especially at 400+ when the closure rate is negative.:confused: :rolleyes:

the small hole in the wing right next to the cotpit might be where you got wounded from

If a cannon round hit just outside the cockpit, your pilot might have been within the blast radius.

It doesn't appear that there was much armor to the side of the pilot.  Were they counting on the wing root to protect the pilot?
