Scout Vehicle extra...
« on: September 12, 2007, 12:45:35 AM »
Allow vehicles such as the jeep and M-3 be able to see enemy gv's if within line of sight give the icon and distance. Note the within line of sight.

Now for a vehicle such as the M8 Allow it to see enemy vehicles within line of sight with an icon. But no distance shown.

Kinda get my point? Sorta bored and thinking of a good way to ensure scouting vehicles get used.

I think it sounds nice, yet with the problems of planes being capable of seeing GVs from miles away I think this might just enhance the whining experience for you guys.

Heres a solution, reduce the distance the planes can see GVs from, and allow the scouts' to have the "line of sight" icon. Actually I think in GVs the actual distance would make life too easy for a tank with a scout. Instead give the scouts the icon and the tanks no icon. :aok :aok

I still think that the game has it backwards. Planes should NOT have GV icons, but GVs SHOULD.

Saxman, from the air the field of visibility is improved as when compared to on ground level. The icons thing just simulates that. However I will agree that the distances at which the "neon sign" appears must be reduced, to maybe 1000 yards?

But I think having icons on GVs for Gvs would ruin the ground war. However let the scouts see them, since they are the spotters and should be used as such.
edit: However I think GV icons should have no range associated with them.

Scouts traditionally uncovered thw enemy by either stumbing on them while they were moving or by drawing fire. Having icons for scouts is just as unrealistic as icons for tanks from the air. Thts why you had PHOTO recon...because even at low levels the pilot isn't going to spot much that isnt out in the open. 90% of the time scouts found the enemy by getting shot at...and often hit.

This applies even at the unit level. during the battle of the bulge entire combat commands were used as "scouts" around Bastogne to "find" the germans (in the absence of any air recon. Task force cherry is a good example of the realities...they lost 1/4 of the command but claimed 15 panthers/tigers as the germans repeatedly stumbled into the allied shermans, TD's and light tanks at close range.

All you need to do to find the enemy is take a jeep and ride around...when you get shot at you found the bad guys:)

The problem is that one round here is all it takes to kill a jeep, and veterans of this game know that. All you have to do is place a huge HE shell in the right spot around the region of the jeep and the scout vehicle which is helping his team mates magically vanishes.

Thus the reason for the icon request if the tank is within the line of sight from the jeep.

In real life the jeep went boom to....

Good tank placement is just the same here as in real life. Use of tree's and other cover or hull down positioning. If the scout has a friendly in overwatch he'll see the shot...

Which is why I think that a set scout vehicle should only have an icon when within the line of sight of the vehicle not behind a tree or a bush of some sort.
