VR Stuff again
« on: September 20, 2007, 07:26:08 PM »
Some of you already know I'm a VR geek and use a Z-800 headset with AH.

Some of you thought this was cool but expensive.

Well I just thought I'd update things on another product called the VR920 ( http://www.icuiti.com/products/vr920.html ) which is a similar product (stereo headset plus 3 axis head tracking) for US$399 .

Someone has written trackir emulation for it so it should work fine with Aces High (perhaps even better than my Z800).  Info on that here : http://www.vr920.com/

Stereo 3D and VR adds a lot to AH, so if your a complete immersion freak like me, it might be worth a go :)

(no I don't own a vr920).

People are saying it downscales 1024x768 just fine. My Z800 is only 800x600 and its perfect. The added benefit is that when running in stereo you're rendering twice as much. So the lower res ensures higher FPS, especailly in stereo, lower FPS sucks on headsets and is really noticeable.

IMHO choosing between 800x600 stereo and 1600x1200 2D I'd always take the stereo option, its much more immersive.

Yeah it'd be cool, but stereo or not, 640x400 is still very low res.  I'd probably end up falling off my chair anyway! ;)

This is definatly the nicest VR headset I've seen so far.  I love the size and weight of it.  If anyone has used this with AH I'd love to see a review.  The only two problems I can see are the resolution (I wish I could try it before bying to get an idea of how the resolution looks) and using Trackir software.  I haven't used trackir but from what I understand; if you move your head 10 degrees left in RL then it shows 90 degrees ingame.  I'd want to be able to set it so that 90 degree headmovent translates to 90 degree head movement ingame. Does anyone know if this is possible with trackir's software?

It's all scalable Griffon, so yeah you can have a 1:1 ratio.

Thing is though past 90 degrees and you run into trouble with the IR emittance/reflection. All need to be visible to the camera.

Not a problem though seeing as the neck can only move about 90 degrees each way anyhow.

For that check six look, we have to move our shoulders- this is where you'll run into trouble with LED detection problems.

I gues for a true VR experience you'll need 2 side cameras and one at the front ... plus the programming to combine them - As far as I know that doesn't exist for the home market.

Still if you're interested check out the freetrack thread in Hardware - TrackIR for $20.

With VR headsets you can scale 1:1, same goes with the VR920. They're not limited like the camera based trackir.

There's not a camera with the VR920 so if I get this right you should be able to look behind you as in real life & see the tail of your plane. Is this right Vulcan?

This thing works great, I got one for christmas and I LOVE it.  Don't let the 640x480 fool ya, it scales it to1024x768 and looks just FINE.  Very good in fact.  As for the head tracking, it works VERY well.  It is NOT an IR camera, so the head movement is not limited ala track-IR (which i used prior to this. .  The VR920 is overall much superior to the Track-IR, but with a superior price tag as well.  If yall want i can do a more thorough review on this piece of hardware.  Jsut let me know!

The VR920 is a HMD )head mounted display) it has LCDs built into it.  So you dont NEED to look at your monitor, your monitor is on your face! lol.  It also has the advantage of offering stereoscopic vision.. IE true 3D.... the VR920 is WELL worth the money.  I would recommend it to anyone.  The only drawback is that it takes a while to get used to.  Motion sickness comes on quickly when you first start using it.  Your eyes think your really flying and turning, but your body knows better.  THis confuses your brain and causes motion sickness.  After a while these effects go away, and while when i first go tit id have to fly for about t 15 minutes on the VR920, then step away or go back to normal monitor for aboutt 30 or 45, then back to VR, etc etc, NOW i can play for hours straight with the VR with no adverse effects, other than my wife calling me Jordi Laforge, or geek, or some such reference! LOL

according to the website its tracking is only 3 DOF, so its not going to work as well as TIR for head movement,  and it only supports a handful of games and currently, AH is not one of them

I guess you could use TIR with it though.. (can you?)

also it requires the use of Nvidia sterio drivers, which havent been updated in forever, so late model nvidia cards such as the 8 series may have problems, if you have a Non Nvidia card you cant use them at all. (not in 3d anyway)

not trying to piss in your cheery-Os or anything..  just stating what ive found out about them,

Ahh, Thanks for clearing that up. Thought is was like Track IR. I couldn't view the web sites they posted here at work, because they are blocked. So i couldn't get to see how it works.
