On a tangent, I've just been reading Osprey's "Beaufighter Aces of WW2". There's a description of a (very short) fight between a Beaufighter and some unarmed Ju 52s over North Africa; the solders in the Ju 52s are described as firing back at the Beaufighters with small arms. It didn't do them any good at all, but it's one of those little things I didn't expect. Perhaps the paratroopers in Aces High could be a bit more proactive.

Doesn't sound like the best way to die, trapped in a plummeting Ju52, surrounded by bullet-ridden corpses, but then again there was a war on.

Give the G.D. C-47 at least 1 gun so it can stand a chance.  The only time I support and would advise a blatant bail in front of the enemy is in C47--screw giving them points for shooting defenseless plane.

I love to GV and do Jabo missions vs GVs, get used to it.  Being good at one helps in the other.

i would enjoy a 50 on my plane so i could stand a chance.

Yes the C-47 is defenceless
and Yes in WWII it was defenceless
it was a cargo plane meaning they cut down on weapons for weight
few and far between would they equip it with a .50 cal, only when STRONG enemy resistance was to be encountered

if you want a transport plane that had some arament, look at the FW 200 Condor, i know it's been requested before and I know it had it's issues (i.e. catching fire on landing [brakes overheating]) but it'd be better as it would serve multiple purposes
supplies
recon
bombing
AND
GOONING!!
all with the guns of a bomber

Sometimes, we just need to remember what the rules of life really are: You only
need two tools: WD-40 and Duct Tape. If it doesn't move and should, use the
WD-40. If it shouldn't move and does, use the duct tape.

I once got a maneuver kill on a Tempest in my unarmed C47. Just took the "fight" into a valley and the wall did the rest. :D

I've wondered this field mod thing. For example I haven't heard about any P-51D's that were delivered with 4 50cals only.

the c47 has a mighty weapon at it's disposal....

the pilot.

a "good" goon pilot is quite sneaky and crafty.  they approach towns from unexpected directions, hugging the ground and hiding as best they can from sight in valleys.

a "dumb" goon pilot fly's in a straight line from the base they took off from to the target town.  some even grab alt (snicker).

when I see a massive mission otw to a base, I jump in a fast plane, sneak out, and fly right to their goon.  how do I know where it is?  because 99% of the goon drivers fly right behind the mission like idiots and are alone and sitting ducks.

to recap.

if you want to make it to the town, be sneaky.  approach from an unexpected direction.

always fly as low to the ground as possible, and if you can, use the terrain as cover.

do not ever fly right behind the conga line of friendlies flying from your base to the target base.

(yes murder, I had many a right hand turning duel in c47's in AW)

Wrong ... just about a month ago I was speaking with my ex-uncle-in-law who piloted C47s in WWII in Burma I believe. He flew the "Hump" ... I forget where that was.

I specifically asked him if they had an .50 cals on board to shoot out the "jump" door ... he looked at me like I had one-eye ... his reply ... F**& NO !!! I WISH !!!

As for a .50 cal in the goon, I don't really think we need it. If the attackers do their job right then all the goon needs to do is fly in and drop troops.

It wouldn't be fair, you have got to be kidding me, maybe attackers should be limited on ammo and bombs as well.
